Editorial Reviews

Review

"Beautiful illustrations, which capture the whimsy and absurdity inherent in folk and fairy tales." - School Library Journal

"Hague's retellings tend toward the gentle (the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood is merely chased away), but they get to the emotional core of each tale. All " - Publishers Weekly

We are big Michael Hague fans at our house. We have several of his books and are fond of his illustration style. This collection of classics is fun to look at and the story-telling is easy on the ears. My daughters (4 and 6 yrs old) have really enjoyed this book.

This book is beautiful, as you can see from the cover - but what I love most is that the stories are told in such a gentle way, and altered just a bit for younger listeners - to avoid some of thetragic endings that sometimes go with fairy tales. My 3 and 6 year old love to hear these each night.

The book fell apart in less than a year of normal, not-abusive use. Boo.

Also, I would have like a foreword with explanations of where these tales came from, reasons for choosing the particular ones in this book, editing choices, and so on. The book just starts right in with the stories.

You can read this book to your grandchild and then later they can read it to you. The illustrations are wonderful. It's a great book for families to pass down through generations
