Many, If Not All, Are Indeed Treasured,
By AvidOldiesCollector (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Treasured Tunes, Vol. 3 (Audio CD)
In this, their third release in the series, Stardust Productions of Canada continues with their wonderful mix of tunes that, having been extremely popular in their time, are now included in any number of multi-artist compilations, and others that would require some considerable digging to find them in a quality CD format.
They also continue with their odd insert of a tune here and there which charted only in Canada, in this case Itchy Twitchy Feeling by Jimmy Oliver. But among those that would normally require some significant searching are: Barbara by The Temptations - not THE Temptations of Motown fame, but rather a white doo-wop quartet from Flushing, N.Y., whose only hit went to # 29 Billboard Pop Hot 100 in the spring of 1960; Baby Blue by The Echoes (# 12 Hot 100 in 1961); Teenage Heaven by Johnny Cymbal (a # 58 Hot 100 in June 1963 for the Scots artist who is often lumped in with the one-hit wonders based upon his earlier Mr. Bass Man - but that's a mistake because, in addition to this minor entry he would have a # 11 in late 1968 with Cinnamon under the name Derek. Others in that vein include the 1970 # 5 R&B/# 11 Hot 100 by The Presidents called 5-10-15-20 (25-30 Years Of Love) and, from 1974, Sugar Baby Love by the British group The Rubettes, which went to # 37 Hot 100 in late summer. Sure to please.

Should be as popular as Ace and Eric reissues!,

I am a enthousiastic collector, and have almost all the Time Life rock n roll stuff, as well as ACE and Eric records cds of this era.
Honestly, if you go for 50s 60s songs, Ace and Eric records are unsurpassed, in their song selection and booklets info. But this is a highly forgotten collection that still hosts amazingly enough some songs that are no where else to be found. Ok some of them esp. of the 70s and 80s do not belong there, but that still leaves you with enough gemms I would say. So this whole series is excellent, and must have! A few points why: 20 tracks per cd (Time life is also excellent, but you get 15 per cd!) not the same old songs over again, but many rare and still excellent tracks! last but not least good sound quality. |
