Book Description

0962848131 978-0962848131 May 1, 1998
This is an inspirational book that explores the human spirit as the genuine source of creativity. As a celebration of spirit, it is written by a renown ceramist to provide a gentler understanding of what it is to be naturally creative. It is also a guide that takes us, spinning and turning through the senses, to the identity center of our being.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Robert Piepenburg is a well-known artist, author and creative pathfinder. He has been the recipient of a National Endowment award and several Creative Artist Grants from the Michigan Council for the Arts. His works are in many private and public collections including the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. As a teacher, who passionately honors the primal dimensions of human possibilities, he was recently selected by his college as the Outstanding Teacher of the Year.

From the Author

Once we recognize the dimensions of the spirit we can identify with its natural role in our evolution as loving and creative beings. As we live with its energy, our identity as a physical-mental self becomes an identity with a spiritual self. When we experience the expansive domains of spiritual awareness, we embrace the very heart of our creativity. Suddenly we begin to mesh, we merge, and we become one with this life-gifting force. In essence, we become a totally creative being. When I make pottery, for example, I don't doubt for a second that my spirit, not my hands, is the real force shaping my clay.

More About the Author

My wife Gail took this 2009 photo just after purchasing my John Carlo look-alike hat in Porto Venere, Italy. It's striking enough that I'm tempted (well ... almost) to write another book just to put it on the jacket. Just so you know, John Carlo is the consummate Italian gentleman whose camaraderie we had the pleasure of sharing with our cherished friends (and Italian traveling companions) Jan and David Roberts. If you're looking for a profoundly impressive ceramic book, check out the new edition of "David Roberts, Painting With Smoke" for which I had the honor of writing the forward.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Spirit of Creativity, October 3, 2001
This review is from: Treasures of the Creative Spirit (Paperback)
Ceramic artists, especially those involved with Raku firing, are probably already familiar with Robert Piepenburg. Many of us have at least one of his books, most likely either 'Spirit of Clay' or 'Raku', on our shelves already. This book is an exploration of the connections between our psyche/spirit and our creativity, written for anyone interested in fostering their creativity. The book references, and even quotes from, the 'Spirit of Clay' in a number of places, but it is more of a sequel than a re-write and is a wonderful resource for artists no matter what their chosen form of expression. Don't let the references to spirit and spirituality fool you. This is a book about your internal flames and sparks, not one devoted to any single picture of divinity or, as was the case with 'The Artist's Way', a specific religious dogma.
