This book is a wonderful story of love and hopefulness. Caregivers for loved ones with any debilitating illness will find very useful information. Pat Synder has shared her personal journey and the obstacles that exist in order to help others find their way and discover that there is hope and help. Pat makes it clear that LBD is a devastating diagnosis, but "Treasures" are abundant for families. I believe that the all inclusive lists of tips for medical help, controlling stressors, exercise, social support, faith, helpful resources, and more will serve as a quick reference for caregivers. This book provides so many ideas that caregivers can utilize to postpone the need for a nursing facility. There is much hope and practical help for caregivers to be found in this book as well as teaching us how to be better than we are inspite of the challenges we face.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Few of us would have the courage to draw back the curtains on our personal lives the way that Snyder has done, but in doing so she will undoubtedly help those who are struggling with a spouse or loved one stricken with a chronic illness. While Treasures in the Darkness contains very precise information about LBD (particularly the Caregiving Tips section), the theme and message of the book transcends whatever disease a victim, caregiver and his/her family may be facing. The messages of love, self-reflection, forgiveness, patience, acceptance and undying devotion are at the heart of the book and offer insights for anyone facing a family struggle, particularly with a spouse. We each try to live our lives in such a way that, when we are called Home, we leave something behind, a gift of sorts, that helps those who follow to understand that God had important reasons for creating us. Treasures in the Darkness will no doubt be among the gifts Pat and John Snyder leave behind.

Some would say this book has all of the elements that every author strives for. The chapters on family evoked laughter, tears, pain, joy and hope. It spoke to me as a wife, mother, grandmother and child. It awakened some of my own "demons" and the desire to put them at rest. It made me want to communicate better with my own spouse and children, as well as improve our relationships with friends and family. On top of all this, I was educated on this disease of which I knew nothing about. Thank you for sharing such a compelling, wonderful, selfless, revealing portrayal of your journey. God Bless you and your family.

This book was a quick, to the point read with incredible amounts of information that is useful to people dealing with this tragic diagnosis as well as other care-taking situations. Ms. Snyder's targeted observations, suggestions and research are well developed and diverse. I read it in an evening and within 24 hours passed it to a friend.

This book is made up of very short chapters that capture various incidents in Pat's life as a caregiver for her spouse, diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia. She reveals her emotions and thoughts as she deals with the diagnosis and the family dynamics while struggling to come up with the best ways to handle various situations. The last section of the book has tips for dealing with the disease and with being a caregiver.

As I read the book there were moments when I thought Pat shared a little more than I wanted to know about family conflicts. When I finished and took a few moments to reflect about this, I realized that these personal details could be very beneficial for a lot of people to read. When Lewy invades your life it is going to bring upset and struggle and not all decisions or reactions are going to be what you wish they were when you look back at them. You just have to keep going and work with what is facing you now.

I think the most important point Pat made in this book is that care and attention given to patients in the early stages makes a huge difference in quality of life!! Find a doctor you can work with. There may not be a cure yet - but we can find ways to appreciate the time we are given and the joy of being alive even when we only get glimpses of our loved one peeking through the Lewy as time goes by.

These were the words I needed to hear. There were so many parallels to my own story, it was uncanny. Pat's words confirmed a lot of my own feelings and allowed me to feel less "alone". Thank you, Pat, for sharing your journey. I know your book will help others.

This is an intimate journey through a segment of life very few of us would care to experience, yet Pat Snyder leads us through it with dignity and passion and hope. We all assume we are blessed with the finest medical care industry in the world and yet it is still populated by imperfect human beings with white coats and many titles in their names. Dealing with these professionals is a major storyline of the book and Mrs. Snyder does pioneering work in telling us how to cope with conflicting diagnoses about her husband's condition. Having finally captured a definitive cause of the illness on her 11th physician, she guides us through his treatment and her own challenges with other family members and her acceptance of what life will be like in a future so different than what she envisioned. This is one courageous woman's story of wrestling with every human emotion and coming to terms with a slightly diminshed but profoundly more loving relationship with the most important person in her life-her husband. I am moved by her story and you will be too.
