Book Description

January 10, 2005

In 1938, Thomas Gilcrease, a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, opened the first museum devoted to the art of the American West. A true visionary, Gilcrease was ahead of his time in understanding the importance of America’s own heritage. His passion for art and history, his Native American ancestry, and his oil revenues coincided in a rare alignment. His legacy is an astounding collection of paintings, sculptures, artifacts, rare books, and documents. This lavishly produced book, featuring nearly two hundred color reproductions, tells the story of Gilcrease and of the renowned museum that bears his name.

Compiled by the museum’s curators, Treasures of Gilcrease exemplifies the beauty and breadth of the museum’s resources. The fine art collection alone boasts more than 10,000 American works, ranging in styles from classical to romantic to impressionist and by such master artists as George Catlin, Charles M. Russell, Thomas Moran, and Frederic Remington. The works by Native artists also span styles ranging from painted hides to twentieth-century flat-style. The artifacts—300,000-plus pieces housed in the galleries and vaults—include ceramics, clothing, pipes, and objects of utility, ceremony, and ornamentation. The archives collection contains some 100,000 manuscripts, books, photographs, maps, imprints, and broadsides. Treasures of Gilcrease offers a vivid and engaging tour through these collections in the company of the experts who know them best.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Carefully Selected Sample of the Museum, May 17, 2005
This review is from: Treasures of Gilcrease: Selections from the Permanent Collection (Paperback)
The Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma houses one of the best, if not the pre-iminent, collections of Western American art in the world. Of the half million or so items in the museum, some 200 have selected by the museum's curators for photographing and presentation in this large format book.

Included are paintings by Catlin, Russell, Moran, and Remington. The front cover of the book is Moran's "Tower Falls" perhaps the single thing that caused the Congress to set aside Yellowstone National Park.

While the subject of the American West may be thought of by some as not suitable for serious work, some of the painting, such as the night time scene of the Pony Express (Frank Tenney Johnson) are of as high a technical quality as can be found anywhere.

A mere book is not the same as visiting the museum, but is about as close as most of us can come.

Beautiful Book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Museum Guide, July 14, 2008

This review is from: Treasures of Gilcrease: Selections from the Permanent Collection (Paperback)
This is a great guide to the Gilcrease collection in Tulsa, OK. After visiting the museum I wanted more and this book filled the bill. It contains a nice collection of pictures of the key pieces, both paintings and sculptures, in the museum as selected by the curators and also contains pictures and postcards from the archives which are not on display all the time. This book adds completion to my visit to this wonderful art collection. This is a nicely produced book with complete descriptions of the pieces presented.
