5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Me Hearties!
This was a lot of fun! I think my husband enjoyed it as much as our four-year-old son! My little one was really excited to find all of the hidden treasures. I'm planning to purchase two more for my twin nephews' birthday. A bit of advice: Please wear the enclosed safety goggles, as the rock island debris is a bit hard, and does tend to "fly" everywhere. And, please note,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Too much effort for the booty...
We got this toy by mistake, but the company let us keep it so I gave it to my 10 year old and his friend. They really had to hammer at this for a long long time before they found any of the treasure. They didn't think that part was very fun - they just said it was hard. Once they began finding the treasure, they stuck with it until they had dug it all up, so I think...

I'm planning to purchase two more for my twin nephews' birthday. A bit of advice: Please wear the enclosed safety goggles, as the rock island debris is a bit hard, and does tend to "fly" everywhere. And, please note, this is most definitely an outdoor adventure. It's pretty messy, but it's a blast.

Great Item. Lot's of fun for kids... I think my daughter had to dig out like 18 itmes. Much better then any other digging adventure kits I've ever bought. Well worth it.

I can't rave enough about this kit- talk about FUN! My five year old is an aspiring archaeologist and along with my three year old the boys had an absolute blast digging out the treasure! As previous reviews stated it is messy so a roasting pan outside is an ideal place to do this project. The initial digging is a bit tough but once the big chunks break off it's treasure after treasure to find. The only other thing I could add is that a paint brush is also a valuable asset with this toy- especially if you are discussing archaeology, anthropology or other digging sciences.

5.0 out of 5 stars HUGE HIT!, August 7, 2008

This toy was an enormous hit with my five-eary-old. He received it as a gift for his 5th birthday and while the child can only "dig" for the treasures one time, the experience was the best and the "treasures" are still played with on a regular basis. The words my son used as he was "digging" were "TOTALLY AWESOME!!!" "WICKED COOL!!!" etc... I plan on adding this toy to my list of favorites to give as gifts again and again.

We got this toy by mistake, but the company let us keep it so I gave it to my 10 year old and his friend. They really had to hammer at this for a long long time before they found any of the treasure. They didn't think that part was very fun - they just said it was hard. Once they began finding the treasure, they stuck with it until they had dug it all up, so I think they enjoyed that part. From their perspective, overall, they had a decent time with it, but I don't think either of them would want one of these again. I can't imagine any of the kids featured in the other reviews were hammering this by themselves -- it was really hard - I tried it too.

Definitely do this outside, and everyone participating should wear eye protection. Little rocks fly everywhere. At the end, you have a pretty big mess.

This would be more fun if it weren't so much work for a handful of little plastic treasures.

I bought this for my 7 year and 4 year old daughters (one for each). They both had fun chipping away and finding all of the treasures, but it does make quite a mess (the little rocks are everywhere, but at least it was on a tile floor so I can just sweep it up).

My daughter had a digging set similar to this one last year (she was 11) and it took her MONTHS to find everything. (That was an Egyptian dig) This one was made with different materials, and was much easier to get into. It comes with metal tools instead of plastic, which is great. A kid can dig through this carefully in an hour, or two boys can completely destroy it in 10 minutes. (My son preferred it that way) The cleanup was also quicker as this set is made of fine gravel instead of clay-type sand that stains fingers. Both of my kids really enjoyed it using their different methods. I think this set is best for younger kids (not teenagers) and can be a lot of fun. If you want something more difficult, look for that Eqyptian dig I mentioned.

Our 5 year old loved this. We got both the Pirate Treasure and Dinosaur one. He got to discover the hidden treasures in the rock. We got to practice safety by donning the included safety glasses and doing this outside in a safe place. He loved recovering the pieces and putting together the resultant skeleton. He played with the both the pirate treasure and the skeleton for a few weeks!

Down sides ... the rocks are held together by some stinky glue. It smells like what I remember as Foraldehyde (but I didn't check the box to see what it really was). Also, the silly hammer provided wasn't heavy enought to whack the rock apart. I used a real hammer and then changed to the provided one for detail work. Eventually my son got tired of hitting the rock, and asked me to do it.

Overall, though, he loved these.
