Gr 4-7-Three consistent, accurate, and interesting titles in a series that literally "uncovers" history. Patent's enthusiasm for these subjects, which were buried for centuries, is contagious. In the first title, the author discusses the mystery behind the creation of China's Buried Warriors, the thousands of terra-cotta statues belonging to Qin Shihuangdi, the First Emperor of China, and excavated in 1974. The author's text makes for fascinating reading and the explanations are clear. While Pompeii gives no new information, students will appreciate its fresh and helpful format and illustrations. Spanish Main discusses the sinking of Spanish galleons near the Florida Keys in the 1600s and the subsequent salvage of their riches (including 27 tons of silver). It will interest fans of undersea exploration and budding historians alike. The books are well illustrated and include clear, color photographs of the sites and artifacts, reproductions, and maps. Every since I was a child I've loved nature and animals. I spent my time out of doors, picking flowers and scooping tadpoles out of ponds. So it's no wonder I studied biology and became an author myself of a favorite gift when I was young, a book about nature. I've expanded into other fascinating areas of nonfiction, too, especially historical topics of the American west, such as Lewis and Clark and Native Americans.

The story of Mel Fisher's 16-year search for the lost treasure ship Atocha is a compelling one, and this retelling of it is worthy of the tale. The Spanish ship Atocha, laden with tons of precious metals and jewels, sank in a storm off Florida in 1622. Salvage efforts were frustrated by more storms and a wreck too low in the water to get at without modern diving technology. Mel started looking for the wreck in 1969 and he found it at terrible personal cost. But it is a great story and has wonderful sidebars. I am a children's librarian and kids will love this.

With Odysesey Marine Exploration finding sunken treasure in 2007, it's great to read about another great find - Mel Fisher's find of the Atocha. Pirate of the Caribbean fans might like reading about finding sunken ships and their treasure, too. The book is well written and includes wonderful drawings.
