Through first-person accounts and lavish photographs, the authors provide a close look at the coastal ecology of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf coasts to help the reader understand the uniqueness, fragility, and value of the various coastal environments. The book's breadth of coverage is both its strength and weakness. By covering all three U.S. coasts, it appeals to readers from all over the country, but the amount of territory covered limits its depth. The lack of a bibliography weakens the book as a reference tool. However, the timely topic and high-quality text make this a useful addition to high school and public libraries.

More About the Author

I have been writing since my teen years, when I covered high school sports for my hometown newspaper, The Herald, in Bridgeport, Conn.
I continued working at the paper while I was in college. In the mid-1950s I began working for The New York Daily News, writing feature stories. In 1963, I left The News, going to Chilton Books in Philadelphia, and then to the National Geographic Book Division. I began freelancing in 1981, but I continued contributing to Geographic publications.
