Book Description

February 2008
The boy pharaoh's vast store of tomb goods has intrigued the world not only for what it reveals, but also for the questions it raises about life in ancient Egypt. Interest in the pharaohs will rise again this year to meet the beginning of a two-year tour of "Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs"-an exhibition of over 130 objects rarely seen outside the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The museum's immense art and archaeological heritage comes alive, providing a broad background for those interested in the story of King Tutankhamun and in Egypt's past from the formation of the first unitary state in the Nile Valley to the Roman conquest. Complete with comprehensive descriptions of the famous grave goods of Tutankhamun and the treasures of Tanis, the book dedicates ample space to the pyramid sites of Giza, Saqqarah, and Dahshur, the royal tombs of Thebes, and the temple of Karnak. Here is an authoritative and elegant itinerary through the world's greatest collection of Egyptian antiquities in one volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars Egyptian Museum of Cairo, November 16, 2006
An excellent collection of photographs and key information relating to the most significant exhibits. Well worth it as homework before visiting the museum, a momento after visiting, or a tasty sample to stimulate your interest in this area.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book for Overview of Egyptian Museum Cairo, September 12, 2009

I find that this book is the best introduction of the great treasures of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The pictures are fantastic and the judicial selection of the pieces in the museum is apt. One book cannot do justice to the collection but this book gives a good introduction.

3.0 out of 5 stars Much more than just King Tut, February 3, 2008

I bought this book on accident, thinking it was a more complete compilation of the treasures found in Tutankhamun's tomb and a companion piece to the U.S. museum exhibition. (My bad...I obviously didn't even bother to read the complete title before snatching this book up out of the bargain pile!) Although the book does feature some of Tut's treasures, most of the pages are devoted to other relics housed in the Egyptian Museum of Cairo. While interesting to browse through, it just wasn't what I was hoping for. Also, there isn't much text in the book, so the information on the artifacts presented is rather limited. Still, anyone interested in ancient Egyptian history will enjoy browsing through this book, and I'm sure I'll appreciate it even more if I ever make it to Egypt myself someday and get to see all these relics in person.
