5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for a Strong Devotional Life December 2, 2008
Format:Imitation Leather
"The Treasury of Daily Prayer" is a devotional book intended primarily for Lutherans, but useful for any Christian.

The main feature of the "Treasury" is it's day-to-day devotional readings. Each day's devotion features a reading from the book of Psalms, an Old Testament Reading, a New Testament Reading, an excerpt from the writings of a prominent historical theologian (e.g. Martin Luther, John Chrysostom, Anselm of Canterbury), and a prayer. Each day's reading is about 40 verses and they loosely work their way through a book of the Bible (or large sections from longer books). They don't necessarily go Genesis then Exodus, etc., but rather take a book of the Bible that is historically associated with the season of the Church year (e.g. sections from Revelation were read during the last days of the Church Year; in Advent, Isaiah is read). In all, about 1/3 of the Old Testament and nearly all of the New Testament is read during the course of the year.

In addition to the daily readings, other the "Treasury" contains other features that will certainly foster the user's spiritual growth. Included within these are orders of worship for private and family devotions which are based on the historic church's pattern of daily prayer (e.g. Matins, Morning Prayer, and a morning liturgy; Evening Prayer, Compline, and an evening liturgy), seasonal propers, the complete book of Psalms (pointed for chanting), sample prayers for various concerns, and Martin Luther's Small Catechism.

After giving it a thorough examination and using it as part of my private daily devotions for over a month, I highly recommend the "Treasury of Daily Prayer." The readings connect the reader with the rhythm and flow of the church year while connecting him with the historic church. The daily Scripture reading are very appropriate, and are complimented by the day's Psalm, writing, and prayer. Everything necessary for purposeful daily devotions, respecting the historic church is included within this one book.

The only drawbacks I've found are the following: The layout of the book has the section of liturgies smack dab in the middle of the book, which hasn't proven to be a useful place for me. This user would have preferred a less awkward location within the book. Also, the "Treasury" comes with a six-ribbon removable bookmark, which doesn't appear to fit quite right. I find that I'm getting far too frustrated trying to fit that silly bookmark back into the book's spine.

Yet, I admit that these drawbacks are very minor. I would highly recommend the "Treasury of Daily Prayer" to anyone who would like to begin daily devotions or increase the depth of their devotional life.

One of the high points of the book is the included one-year lectionary cycle. This includes a portion of a Psalm, an Old- and New-Testament reading (though not an epistle + gospel), a reading from the church fathers, a verse from a hymn, a suggested Book of Concord reading (it is a very Lutheran book), and a concise, meaningful prayer of the day. This makes for a great daily devotional.

The book also contains the complete Psalms, marked for singing in plainsong, some well-written daily and topical prayers, etc. It's scripture front to back. If you prefer to take your Christianity from scripture rather than from your best, purpose driven life now, this is the book to work from, a marvel from Concordia Publishing House.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kindle Version Needs Navigation October 8, 2011
By mabbts
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This review is for the Kindle version of the book. I gave it 3 stars because the content is excellent and I'll likely get the print version. However, the Kindle version lacks useful navigation. The book references page numbers to use for various parts of the devotional. Those page numbers don't work for the Kindle version. Instead, the publisher should add hyperlinks throughout the book to make it easier to navigate. I tried bookmarks, but even those quickly became unwieldy.

Until a more robust navigation system is programmed into this title, I recommend avoiding the Kindle version and sticking with print. The directions for the print version advise heavy use of ribbon place markers--the analog version of hyperlinks, this emphasizes the need for hyperlinks in the e-version!)

I preferred to use the Kindle version even though it cost more than the hard-cover book. I can search in it very easily on my Kindle.
