I love these books. This has been a great way to introduce my 8 year old to the classics. They are illustrated so this helps her to enjoy them more.

The person who gave these books 1 star was upset that the books are abridged.
Yes, they are, just like Readers Digest's Condensed Books. Nonetheless, there is nothing of substance missing in them. I purchased these books for my kids but I really enjoy them myself. I have always wanted to read the classics but never had the time. These books are great ... I read Treasure Island in 2 days during my spare time. I plan on reading all of the Great Illustrated Classics, except for Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn which I will read Mark Twain's full version.

If you are not sure, my suggestion is to purchase one of these books (pretty inexpensive) and check it out. I think you'll be impressed with the quality and wonder why you ever bothered to spend so much time reading the "full unillustrated" version when you could read these excellent books with the illustrations!

I am very pleased with this purchase. Many kids today don't read classic literature and are rarely even exposed to it. We have a silent sustained reading period in our school every day and, quite often, I have students come into my math class without a book to read. I bought these illustrated classics for the dual purpose of being sure my students would have something available to read, and to give them at least some exposure to the plots of great classic literature. My hope is that they may be inspired to read the originals, but if they won't, they will still at least become a little more culturally literate.

These books are all ABRIDGED although it doesn't disclose that anywhere that's prominent. Don't accidentally buy any of this series thinking these are the UNabridged classics. What a rip-off. Amazon should really post the "adapted by" author!!!!!
