This, like CATS, DOGS AND HORSES, was one of the first books I ever actually owned, and when I found it at a book sale I wanted to see if it held up. It does. "Adapted from the world's great classics" by Anne Terry White, this is a treatment intended for older kids--say 11 up; its language is more mature than that of most juvenile mythology collections, including that of the characters, who tend to speak in a formal style, as they should in mythological settings. The contents include retellings of the most important Greek myths (the creation of the world, the first flood, Phaeton and the horses of the Sun, Pluto and Persephone, Echo and Narcissus, Orpheus and Eurdycie, Perseus, Heracles, Jason, Daedalus, Theseus, Oedipus), the saga of Beowulf, Roland and Oliver at the Pass of Roncevaux, Tristram and Iseult, Rustem and Sohrab, and Sigurd the Volsung. The imagery is often rather violent, but that's probably to be expected, and the angular, primitive-looking illustrations by Alice and Martin Provensen give it a certain distinction. It would have been nice to have seen more Arthurian and Viking legendry in the book, but White was probably working with space constraints and had to fit in just so much. Altogether, though, it's a very satisfying volume and one I'll be keeping on my shelves for future rereadings.
