Book Description

October 9, 2006
A rich Christmas cake of an anthology, stylishly packaged and brimming over with heartwarming drama, seasonal merriment and unexpected thrills. Michele Slung, who has been creating original and highly praised collections for thirty years, believes in bringing new energy to the term "old-fashioned." That is to say, she's a reader's reader who loves to uncover those stories written in another time that surprise us by their vibrancy, by the way they move us or make us laugh, while also reminding us of our most deeply held values and our ideals.

Among the writers we might expect to find are such familiar classic masters as Bret Harte, Mark Twain, Sarah Orne Jewett, Saki, O. Henry or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The real idea, however, is the crafting of a book that is as unexpected in its roster of authors as it is in its effect on our heartsand spirits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Author Rediscovers Forgotten Stories, February 20, 2007
This review is from: A Treasury of Old-Fashioned Christmas Stories (Hardcover)
Michele Slung is well-known for the story collections she has edited through the years and all are excellent, but this one is my favorite. She spent hours at the Library of Congress rediscovering out-of-print short stories with Christmas themes, and many of them haven't been read by anyone for half a century or more. Reading each of them is like opening a Christmas package, for each one is well-written and delightful and brings to the reader the joy of discovery and surprise. I couldn't reccommend this book more and I urge everyone who likes to sit by a fireside with the winter snow--real or imagined--falling softly outside the window, to order a copy (or copies) of A Treasury of Old-Fashioned Christmas Stories for the next holiday season.

My better half and I have been reading, "A Treasury of Old-Fashioned Christmas Stories", together over the holiday season. We agree that it's one of the most wonderful Christmas gifts we've ever given ourselves. The stories are heartwarming and poignant evoking at times laughter and at other times tears. The stories offer a glimpse into Christmas past and an appreciation of authors that are either known for their other works today or have been unjustly forgotten. If you enjoy thoughtful, well crafted stories by consummate wordsmiths you will treasure this collection as the gift it truly is.

I had hoped to send my nephew (who is an avid reader)this book for Christmas. I was hoping to find a bit more classic shorts - And ended up getting Dickens Christmas Carol instead. I plan to send this book back.
