"A Treasury of Old Testament Heroes" by Patricia Pingry provides simple, quick, illustrated stories of Noah, Joseph, Joshua, Samson, David, Daniel, and Jonah. The illustrations (each story illustrated by a different artist) are well done. Even though this book is about 190 pages, it takes only a short time to read the whole book. Preschool children will stay focused through a complete reading.

Hard to explain concepts from these scripture stories are avoided. For instance, in the story of David and Goliath it never comes out and says that David slew or killed Goliath. It instead says "The stone struck Goliath" and it shows the giant lying on the ground. The story of Noah talks about it raining 40 days and 40 nights but does not bring up the detail that everyone except Noah and his family were drowned. Avoiding the harsher aspects of the stories may be a plus or minus depending on your viewpoint and the age of the child. I think that for preschool children it is appropriate. You will want to follow up with more detailed Old Testament stories when your child is older.

I bought this book for my children when they were toddlers, the book created great Bible time with them before they went to bed. The beautiful pictures kept them captivated while I read. My kids are 6 & 8 now...early last week, this book was pulled out by my 6 year old. She asked if she could read it for her practice reading time...tonight she finished it. It was great for practice reading, the stories were just a perfect length and we both enjoyed talking a bit more in depth about the stories. I'm so glad we have been able to use this book for a few years now.
