5.0 out of 5 stars A good bood about the written history of the Sierra Nevadas, February 3, 1999
This review is from: A Treasury of the Sierra Nevada (Paperback)
A good read about the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. The book is a collection of short stories assembled by Mr. Reid that detail various aspects of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

I expecially enjoyed the short stories and articles by Dan DeQuille, Bret Harte, and Mark Twain.

Mr. Reid preceeds each chapter with an introduction that explains some of the history regarding the author and the subsequent story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Leave only footprints, September 2, 2011
This review is from: A Treasury of the Sierra Nevada (Paperback)
Reid's selection of writings and their chronological presentation from early explorers of the 19th century through the early conservationists create a picture of the Sierra Nevada that is beautiful, and at times quite sad. It is a reminder of how vigilant we must be if there is any chance of preserving these wonders for future generations.

The book was a gift that sat on my shelf for over 10 years before I came across it just before a trip to the Sierra Nevada this summer. During this trip my wife and I took a day trip to Desolation Wilderness and were awed by the beauty of it - and with record snowfalls this past year, the Sierra is buzzing with life. We were also stunned to find empty cigarette packs and other litter along the trails. It reminded me that the final chapter of Reid's book is yet to be written.

The book is a fabulous read, and as other reviewers have pointed out, the relatively short pieces make it an easy book to work into one's day. Reid's introductions to each writing provide excellent context and help weave a cohesive story out of what is a very complex history.

For me, it helped to reinvigorate my interest in the outdoors and prompted me to plan more time with my family enjoying nature.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Treasury is a Treasure, January 31, 2010

This review is from: A Treasury of the Sierra Nevada (Paperback)
I already had a copy of the book when I purchased this copy for a friend. (That says something right there.)

The "Treasury" offers tantalizing tidbits from famous and not-so-famous persons both interesting in themselves and encouragement to read more of authors' works that particularly strike one's fancy.

The short chapters are ideal for reading when only a short time is available
