About the Author

Carolyn Strom Collins and Christina Wyss Eriksson share a love for the work of L. M. Montgomery, the author of the Anne books, and it has inspired them to find out more about Anne and the kind of life she would have lived. They have gathered the results of their research into the beautifully illustrated Anne of Green Gables Treasury as well as The Anne of Green Gables Book of Days and The Anne of Green Gables Christmas Treasury. Both authors live with their families in Minnesota. They founded the L. M. Montgomery Literary Society of Minnesota in 1991. During the summer months Ms. Collins lives on Prince Edward Island and is on staff at the L. M. Montgomery Heritage Museum in Park Corner. Collins and Eriksson are also the authors of other background books inspired by classic works -- The World of Little House, Inside Laura's Little House, My Little House Book of Crafts, The Little House Book of Christmas Crafts, The Little Women Treasury, and Inside the Secret Garden.

This review is from: The Anne of Green Gables Treasury -Special Edition Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Anne of Green Gables 1908-2008 (Perfect Paperback)
"The Anne of Green Gables Treasury" is an entertaining companion volume to Lucy Maud Montgomery's beloved "Anne" series. "Anne of Green Gables" has proved timeless to several generations of her devoted fans, but the details of life in the late 19th century rural Canadian village of Avonlea must now seem a little obscure. Authors Collins and Ericksson have compiled this beautifully illustrated book, rich with quotes, to provide some explanations.

The book opens with a quick biography of L.M. Montgomery and a synopsis of the "Anne" books. An extended exploration of Anne's world includes maps of Avonlea and Green Gables farm which cleverly combine real and fictional details, and diagrams of the real Green Gables farmhouse. Anne's notional family tree and a constructive timeline of her life provide a sense of context against real world events.

Collins and Eriksson explain one-room schoolhouses, now a distant memory outside rural Alaska, and the teaching qualifications Anne had to meet to become schoolmarm at Avonlea. The authors devote a long chapter to tea time, a vital social ritual in Anne's time, and examine in detail the challenges of housekeeping in a largely pre-mechanical age.

Concluding chapters explore Anne's interest in flowers and Prince Edward Island itself, today a worthy tourist destination for its natural beauty and "Anne" associations.

"The Anne of Green Gables Treasury" is very highly recommended to parents of children needing background on Anne's world, and to Anne fans of all ages.
