Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 4^-6. It's somewhat of a surprise that this collection, with tales by such writers as Diana Wynne Jones, Alan Garner, Helen Cresswell, and James Berry, isn't a stellar sampling. It isn't, but it still has plenty of child appeal, with most of the stories being moral folktales emphasizing values such as honesty and charity. The magicians, enchanters, and witches here aren't a scary bunch: a few, such as the bony-legged Baba Yaga in Stephen Corrin's "Yashka and the Witch," aren't very nice, but just as many are buffoons, with the stories themselves ranging from the clever and funny to the nonsensical. Black-and-white sketches scattered throughout add a little extra punch. Stephanie Zvirin
