Amazon.com Review

Some spine physicians estimate that half of the back and neck surgeries performed in the United States may be unnecessary. Treat Your Back Without Surgery puts you in charge of the relief and prevention of back and neck pain. Author Stephen Hochschuler, M.D., a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in spine surgery and cofounder of the Texas Back Institute, and coauthor Bob Reznik, who developed the Texas Back Institute Back Pain Hotline, teach you how your spine works, what the causes of pain are, and what you can do about it. Recommended pain relievers include first-aid remedies, spine injections, Tai Chi, and acupuncture. The book also describes lesser-known therapies, such as the Alexander Technique, Rolfing, reflexology, Aston Patterning, and Ayurvedic medicine. Clear, well-illustrated exercises show exactly what to do to make your back stronger, more flexible, and injury resistant. You'll learn how to lift, stand, sit, drive, sleep, and play recreational sports to minimize back stress. Because sometimes self-help isn't enough, Hochschuler and Reznik also discuss when you should go to the doctor and, as your last resort, how to choose a surgeon. Put this book in the hands of anyone suffering back pain and especially anyone considering back surgery. --Joan Price

3.0 out of 5 stars OK book, but could use more information, April 10, 2000
This review is from: Treat Your Back Without Surgery: The Best Non-Surgical Alternatives for Eliminating Back and Neck Pain (Paperback)
This book is pretty good for those who have very little or no knowledge on the subject of back pain. However, it offers very little to anyone who has studied the subject with some effort. I was hoping for some new insights on treating my own back pain when I purchased this book and got virtually no new information to help my situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the BACK that I have EVER read, October 4, 2004
This review is from: Treat Your Back Without Surgery: The Best Non-Surgical Alternatives for Eliminating Back and Neck Pain (Paperback)
I have had chronic back pain for 2 years-so bad that I have considered taking my own life. Reading this book gave me hope, brought me up to date and allowed me to continue with therapy. I am now looking forward to possibly getting an artificial disk operation so this 36 year old male can get back to taking care of his family and kids. My background is in Medicine and this book offers it all-from the lay person to the Medical Docotor. I highly suggest this book over MANY, MANY others. You can email me at HorsePete@aol.com with ANY questions you may have. My name is Peter Cannice, of Phoenix, Arizona, and I am a survivor because of this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information, April 4, 2000

This book provides GREAT information on all forms of treatment. It reviews everything from traditional to preventative remedies, and also gives tips on keeping your back healthy to avoid future injuries. The exercise pictures were very helpful. Also great for determining if you need back surgery and what the next steps are, how to find a surgeon, etc. if you do. I read this book as soon as I received it and found all of the information to be a great help and future resource!
