1.0 out of 5 stars Misleading title
The title of this book is misleading. I bought it in the belief that this book was entirely about NONsurgical back treatments. However, great part of the book is dedicated to talking about surgery, when it is not needed, when it should be considered only as a last resort, when surgery is recommended and which surgeons and/or hospitals a patient should go to.

This review is from: Treat Your Back Without Surgery: The Best Nonsurgical Alternatives for Eliminating Back and Neck Pain, Fully Updated Second Edition (Paperback)
This book is an easy-to-read overview of back problems that actually helped me tremendously! I have been dealing with back pain for the past several years and visited many doctors, specialists and physical therapists as well as trying many of the "alternative" treatments such as massage, herbs, supplements, glucosamine, chiropractors, liniments and yes even drugs such as Vioxx and Celebrex with minor improvement, but never a long-term cure. I was pleased that this book provides many back-strengthening exercises with easy-to-follow photos and directions. I am very glad I read this book and highly recommend it as it has provided me my first long-term relief in years. Happy reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent balance, April 14, 2005
This review is from: Treat Your Back Without Surgery: The Best Nonsurgical Alternatives for Eliminating Back and Neck Pain, Fully Updated Second Edition (Paperback)
What I appreciated most about this book was it's balanced approach to treating back
and neck pain. Having recently taken up golf, which aggravated a prior back problem,
I read this book to get an understanding of my treatment options. This book provides
excellent coverage of both surgical and non-surgical options as well as, what I found
very interesting, how the mind can influence back pain. I especially liked the exercises
to strengthen the back which I now do as part of my exercise regimen. I'd give this
book five stars for presenting a good even picture of treatment alternatives, many of
which I hadn't really considered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buldging disc resolved, August 22, 2008
This review is from: Treat Your Back Without Surgery: The Best Nonsurgical Alternatives for Eliminating Back and Neck Pain, Fully Updated Second Edition (Paperback)
I was injured in ski accident a couple of years ago. Chiropractor's xrays indicated that I had 2 bulging discs. After a few treatments with Chiroprator and no relief, I went to physical therapist who recommended this book. Pain was beginning to radiate to my right leg and I was willing to try anything to avoid surgery. After a few days of doing the exercises, I experienced, just as the book indicated, the discs returning to position. Pain in leg was completely gone immediately. My back was a little tender for a day, but then pain was gone and I've had no further problems. Terrific book and certainly worth trying before undergoing back surgery. kt

5.0 out of 5 stars Treat Your Back without Surgery, December 26, 2007
This review is from: Treat Your Back Without Surgery: The Best Nonsurgical Alternatives for Eliminating Back and Neck Pain, Fully Updated Second Edition (Paperback)
The book is very practical and accurate. The illustrated motons
with 10 or 20 seconds holding time prove to be effective to allow muscle
or joints to correct itself but not overdoing it with short holding time.

After a visit to a chiropractor (who was highly recommended) and being told I would need a year of treatments with a total cost of $2700.00, I opted to order this book and after doing the exercises for 1 month, I have been pain free from my sciatica!

The "natural" or "nonsurgical" methods mentioned in the book, all of them are methods known to almost everyone who has ever had a back problem. The exercises are the same exercises we can come across on the Internet or even the ones our neighbor may have recommended us. Not a word is said about nutrition, vitamins or the well known Glucosamine, which has been PROVEN to help individuals suffering from back and neck problems. Another thing I disagree with is the use of the term "pain". Though it is true that most back and neck problems cause pain, there are a great number of conditions that are caused due to spine problems and that do NOT cause pain. Not a word has been said about those. (?) At the time I bought this book for my Kindle, I didn't know I could return a book within a week from the moment of the purchase. Had I known, I would have surely returned it.

August 13th, 2011: I was lucky to come across a great DVD "QiGong for beginners" by Master Chris Pei. Thanks to this great DVD that I recommend to everyone, I no longer have any of the problems that initially made me buy this useless book. Unbelievable as it may appear, I am 100% problem free and pain free thanks to QIGONG. If you have any type of muskuloskeletal problems, get this DVD. It is available here on Amazon and is extremely affordable.

5.0 out of 5 stars I agree with the balanced approach to back pain, December 18, 2010
This review is from: Treat Your Back Without Surgery: The Best Nonsurgical Alternatives for Eliminating Back and Neck Pain, Fully Updated Second Edition (Paperback)
I agree with all the posts here. The book is great and I do agree with the balanced approach to back pain. As someone who knows a lot of chiropractors, I wish chiropractic meshed more with physical therapy and personal training. My current chiropractor ([...]) implements many PT elements and host yoga classes. I think that is a step in the right direction. This book can help you avoid the knife (surgery), and for that it is priceless.
