A Practical, Hands-On Resource
Treating Sexually Abused Boys is a much-needed resource that offers clinical guidelines for addressing the unique needs of this population. Written by an expert in the field of childhood sexual abuse, the book contains a wealth of exercises and activities that can be effectively applied in individual and group therapy settings. The techniques and exercises outlined are specifically designed to help sexually abused boys overcome feelings of helplessness, fear, and vulnerability and regain a sense of personal power.

"Treating Sexually Abused Boys offers relevant and comprehensive guidance for all mental health professionals who work with children and adolescents. The ready-to-use therapeutic activities make it an invaluable resource for today's busy clinician."
--Tim Bynum, program director, Sexual Abuse Treatment Services for YWCA of Kauai, Hawaii

"Camino has written a practical, easily understood guide for those who work with boys affected by sexual abuse. Both the experienced therapist and the newcomer will find it helpful."
--Mic Hunter, author of Abused Boys: The Neglected Victims of Sexual Abuse and editor of The Sexually Abused Male, Volumes I & II

"If you have ever shrunk away from working with boy victims of sexual abuse-out of fear of the subject's complexity or your own uncertainty-this book is a must read. It combines practicality with a refreshing directness in teasing apart some of the intricacies of power and vulnerability as those issues play out with this tragically underserved population."
--Eugene Porter, author of Treating the Young Male Victim of Sexual Assault

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book for anyone who works with abuse boys, June 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Treating Sexually Abused Boys: A Practical Guide for Therapists & Counselors (A Jossey Bass title) (Paperback)
An excellent book that gives ideas for treatment groups with abused boys. It gives not only help to prepare in selecting children for the group, but gives you many different activitys. The activitys range from recognizing what feeling trigger different behaviors to realizing they are not to blame for the abuse. There are 50 planed activitys plus other general topics. Many activitys for 7-12 year olds, as well as up to 18 years old. The first part of the book deals with assessment and whether group or individual therapy would be best. I would recomend this book not only for counselors and therapists, but anyone who works with sexually abused boys.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners, September 1, 2005
This review is from: Treating Sexually Abused Boys: A Practical Guide for Therapists & Counselors (A Jossey Bass title) (Paperback)
If you are an experienced clinician who has been in the field for some time, this book will not tell you anything new. This is a great book for graduate students still learning about creating a safe environment and reporting but does not offer anything new to the experienced clinician. The activites are also focused for group sessions, which was disappointing since there was not any creative interventions for working with boys on an individual level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, February 5, 2003
This review is from: Treating Sexually Abused Boys: A Practical Guide for Therapists & Counselors (A Jossey Bass title) (Paperback)
Treating sexual abuse of any kind has got to be one of the more difficult tasks of therapists, counselors, parents, and teachers today, but, unfortunately, it is rapidly becomming more and more necessary as well, and this book does an excellent job at realisticly focusing on areas for treatment and successful methods to be used.

Since the treatment of boys is a fairly new concept, this book is an important resource and should not be overlooked. The activities are well thought out and have practical applications, as well as notes on how they are likely to be received by the patients and what difficulties to expect.

Highly recommended for anyone working with abused children.
