A great book for anyone who works with abuse boys, June 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Treating Sexually Abused Boys: A Practical Guide for Therapists & Counselors (A Jossey Bass title) (Paperback)
An excellent book that gives ideas for treatment groups with abused boys. It gives not only help to prepare in selecting children for the group, but gives you many different activitys. The activitys range from recognizing what feeling trigger different behaviors to realizing they are not to blame for the abuse. There are 50 planed activitys plus other general topics. Many activitys for 7-12 year olds, as well as up to 18 years old. The first part of the book deals with assessment and whether group or individual therapy would be best. I would recomend this book not only for counselors and therapists, but anyone who works with sexually abused boys.

Good for beginners, September 1, 2005
This review is from: Treating Sexually Abused Boys: A Practical Guide for Therapists & Counselors (A Jossey Bass title) (Paperback)
If you are an experienced clinician who has been in the field for some time, this book will not tell you anything new. This is a great book for graduate students still learning about creating a safe environment and reporting but does not offer anything new to the experienced clinician. The activites are also focused for group sessions, which was disappointing since there was not any creative interventions for working with boys on an individual level.

Excellent resource, February 5, 2003
This review is from: Treating Sexually Abused Boys: A Practical Guide for Therapists & Counselors (A Jossey Bass title) (Paperback)
Treating sexual abuse of any kind has got to be one of the more difficult tasks of therapists, counselors, parents, and teachers today, but, unfortunately, it is rapidly becomming more and more necessary as well, and this book does an excellent job at realisticly focusing on areas for treatment and successful methods to be used. Since the treatment of boys is a fairly new concept, this book is an important resource and should not be overlooked. The activities are well thought out and have practical applications, as well as notes on how they are likely to be received by the patients and what difficulties to expect. Highly recommended for anyone working with abused children.

Treating sexually abused boys, June 20, 2000
This review is from: Treating Sexually Abused Boys: A Practical Guide for Therapists & Counselors (A Jossey Bass title) (Paperback)
Treating sexually abused boys is a very practical resource book written by Lisa Camino, a clinical social worker affiliated with the Aspen Community Services Psot Traumatic Stress Disorder Program in Orange County in California. Sexual abuse of boys is an area that has been hidden, due to the focus of sexual abuse on girls and women. Public awareness is fairly recent, even though research has estimated that 2-5% of the male population experiences childhood sexual abuse. Only a small proportion reports the incidents and only a small number of boys actually receive the needed therapeutic intervention. It is an important book, because there are very few texts on the treatment of sexually abused boys. The reader should have a background in child and adolescent development, group theraopy skills, knowledge of child abuse and neglect, psychiatric diagnosis, play therapy and crisis intervention. The first part of the book deals with the therapeutic approach based on empowerment, whereas the second part in very practical terms describe structured activities (a total of 50 activities) to be used in the therapeutic process. This is a much needed text for therapists working in the field of child sexual abuse. Truly a Practical Guide for Therapists, April 18, 2011
This review is from: Treating Sexually Abused Boys: A Practical Guide for Therapists & Counselors (A Jossey Bass title) (Paperback)
This is a very specific, truly practical guide for therapists who work with boys who have been sexually abused. It provides detailed information on assessment, treatment options, and handling challenges. I disagree with the review that said this was only for beginning clinicians; I think any clinician who works with sexually abused boys would find something of value in this book. While the activities are designed for group treatment, some of them could be modified for individual interventions as well.
