Book Description

A ghost's stern warning...

The dead Sciomancer told Lanith to beware of fire and kisses.

He should have told her to RUN.

Enchanters are so attractive, most believe they are amoral seducers. The Church considers them a dangerous lure for a soul's journey into the afterlife. Problem is, Enchanter essence powers all of the magic in Lanith's world of Sye. Because of the escalating attacks from Church Enforcers, the Enchanters have fled to their impenetrable enclaves.

Lanith's husband Tredan has vanished. Her home and curio shop have burned. Long ago, she promised Tredan to seek the Enchanters' help if he ever disappeared, so Lanith teams up with Enchanter Nyle. They discover Tredan wrote a journal filled with spells that will ruin the Enchanters' magic.

There is more bad news. An Enforcer has come to town, and he will stop at nothing to acquire Tredan's journal for the Church. Lanith must stop the Church magician from getting the journal and destroying the Enchanters. Lanith must also overcome her desire for Nyle's delectable essence.

The Church's warnings are true. Saving Sye's magic could damn her soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars a combination of worlds June 25, 2012
By Jim
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Tredans Bane had me captivated. It is a cross between a fantasy wizard world, a murder mystery and a romance novel. I enjoyed the unwinding of the mystery and the way in which the author sets up and reveals the true nature of her characters. She has developed the characters and plot in a way in which I was attached and invested in the story. I found it to be one of those reads that after I became envolved in the story, I found it hard to put down. I give it five stars because it filled all the requirements that I look for in a book, it is well written and a quick read, it held may attention and my longing to read it intensified as I moved through the book, I was satisfied with the results of the ending and can see myself picking up the sequel if there happens to be one. I recommend it to those who like a good mystery with a bit of naughty mingled in! Good Job Lita Burke..thanks for bring this great world to us!

4.0 out of 5 stars A sensual world of magic May 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Tredan's Bane is a Fantasy story with a lot of magic. Of course magic has rules, and this one has had a lot of planning and thought put into it. It brings to mind the detailed character sheets that I've seen my gaming friends compose, thinking out intricate systems of how things work.

Tredan's Bane also has an adventure as Lanith seeks to find her lost Enchanter husband among an intrigue between the Enchanters and the Church who live in uneasy symbiosis in a culture that that emulates both, but in different ways.

I highly recommend also reading Wrath, the prequel to Tredan's Bane which the author offers for free on Smashwords. Apart from filling in some information, it's an enjoyable read and you get to meet Lanith's pet dragonette, which also features in the main story.

The story is very well written. There are evocative references to scents and sensual experiences that take the reader into a world of olfactory magic. So why only 4 stars? It's a matter of personal preference. really. I've never read a story over 100,000 words that I didn't think could benefit from tighter writing or shaving off diversions. I also prefer a little less structure in my magical worlds, you can over plan and work out every detail until a Fantasy world seems too regulated. Magic must have rules of course, but I'm not a big fan of guilds and other strictures. In this case it's necessary to create the tension between the Enchanters and the church that is a prominent feature of the series to come and is done well. Fantasy fans can look forward to an enjoyable and long read with this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Requires more accurate labeling. July 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had a few main difficulties with this book which made it extremely difficult to read.
1) Main character jumps from a long term marriage to being a widow infatuated with another man (or perhaps, men) within days, if not hours. Regardless of the plot hoops created, there either was no actual previous relationship or the now-widow was never fully married to begin with.
2) Explicit sexual content must be tagged (I am tagging this appropriately)
3) World and laws of reality are tortuously constructed to pretty much require pretty much rampant promiscuity. That's obviously up to the author, but this needs to be tagged.

The book is reasonably well written. The plot is generally reasonable. There are a number of sequences where characters take uncharacteristic leave of their senses in their actions to advance the plot, and that perhaps bothers me, but I've certainly seen much worse.

More About the Author

I'm an indie author of fantasy fiction. I'm an avid reader and enjoy downloading titles by new authors onto my Kindle. I work a day job and write my novels early in the morning before the day clutters up my brain.

I've written fantasy fiction since I was 10 years old. As a teenager, I kept a daily journal where I recorded my observations of life and my place within it. As an introvert, it puzzled me how others could be so outgoing and cool (which I wasn't-I was a geek before it was popular).

I wrote my first novels about the magical world ("Sye") in Wrath and Tredan's Bane when I was in college. These early novels were the coming of age explorations of a young Enchanter in the Schools of Magic. The topic of these early stories isn't surprising in hindsight, since this mirrored my own experiences at the time.

Jobs and family have filled the days since college. I've written novels about other wizards, a woman-in-jeopardy thriller, and many non-fiction works for my day jobs. I sought to improve my writing craft during this time. The process is read, write, and hone. Then repeat.

Over these long years, Sye still whispers to me. With the new opportunities of Ebooks and indie publication, I'm denying the words of the Sye Enchanters no longer. I'm their humble scribe. Here are their stories.
