Book Description

January 6, 2003 1585422150 978-1585422159
Now in paperback, this remarkable book invites us to explore the inevitable process of aging and death by examining the many "little deaths" that occur in life, such as divorce, the unexpected loss of a job, or the onset of a sudden illness. We see the powerful independent women who make up the Sisterhood of the Shields as they gain strength, wisdom, and respect during transition into "elderhood," and we learn how to apply these lessons in our own lives.

Amazon.com Review

Slipping back and forth between her writer's life as a white woman in New York City and her mystical life amongst the native Indian women of northern Canada, Lynn Andrews weaves a wise woman's tale of aging. As the popular bestselling author (Medicine Woman) now faces her own midlife passage and wrestles with immortality, she finds herself seeing visions of her old nemesis, the evil sorcerer Red Dog, who has seemingly risen from the dead. What does this all mean? Andrews brings her fears and questions to her elder teachers in Canada, whom she has informally apprenticed with for many years. This is all vintage Andrews--complete with visions, dreams, and lessons from the elders.

Now that our political consciousness has been elevated, it is hard to wholly embrace this white woman's interpretation of native teaching. At times it is even hard to believe that all the encounters with the women in northern Canada really occurred. The dialogue seems stilted, forced into recounting past events from previous books, or contrived into teaching a lesson rather than relaying actual conversations. Yet, there is no doubting that Andrews has some interesting insights on aging, especially for her fans who appreciate and feel at ease in her shape- and place-shifting format. --Gail Hudson --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

"I began to tell my story twenty years ago. Except for changes in names and locations, it is true." So begins Lynn V. Andrews's 18th book, Tree of Dreams: A Spirit Woman's Vision of Transition and Change. Andrews, author of Medicine Woman (now in its 40th printing), recounts the continuation of her apprenticeship with the Native American teachers who have been training her in their sacred ways for nearly 20 years. Here, she explains her transition into the second part of life, discussing change, aging and death in an inspiring, spiritual way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tree of Dreams - a must, November 14, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Lynn's newest book is a beautiful topper to the previous set, continuing her story with Agnes, Ruby, Red Dog, July and the Sisterhood of the Shields. It takes us deeper into the real magic of womanhood, mostly of relationships, struggles for power, the use of sorcery, and most importantly how we view our reality and maintain our own power center and balance point through our heart and intention. Beautifully written, easy reading, and grabs you into it immediately, as all of Lynn's books do. Can't wait for the next book, Lynn!

5.0 out of 5 stars Deserves to be read more than once!, April 26, 2002

TREE OF DREAMS is not my favorite Lynn Andrews book -- and I've read and loved most of them. That's not to say I didn't like it! Any time spent with Agnes and Ruby is time well spent. And Lynn is a GREAT storyteller. It's just that there isn't as much adventure in this one (until the end) and there's a lot of talk. But very valuable talk it is! She's much more philosophical in this book -- reminds me of Ecclesiastes: We get older, our friends die, we think about the circle of life and death, the transitions, the fact that we are one, that our loved ones never really leave us. Be open. Believe. Move with the flow. It's all about love. Her closing words are golden: "There is magic in the world if you want the world to be magical. If you want life to be special, it will be. ... What matters is your ability to love. ..."

5.0 out of 5 stars The journey continues..., November 27, 2001

Anga McBryde (Chanhassen, MN United States) - See all my reviews
Once again, Lynn Andrews brings the insights and wisdom she has gained in the journey of her life to the rest of the world. Her teachers, the Sisterhood of the Shields, have guided Andrews through her own challenges and tests, which has been documented in her previous books. Now Andrews brings all of this knowledge together, as if she is surrounding it with a circle or a hoop, in her book, the Tree of Dreams. Andrews does not pretend to have all of the answers, nor does she try and represent a particular native culture. She simply shares the teachings she has received from an ancient group of wise women, and she recounts her own examples of how she has had to learn and grow. I am glad she has chosen to bring this to the world.
