Imagine a world taken over by unseen entities that "permanently remove" people they see as evil: murderers, rapists, thieves. Not so horrible, is it? Now imagine they remove people they see as having no purpose: celebrities, politicians, Paris Hilton. Scarier, isn't it? In the Tree Museum, the unseen Signmakers conquer the earth and force humanity into a more peaceful, environmentally friendly way of life. Is this a utopia or dystopia? The novel makes no judgments on the issue, but uses this changing world as a backdrop to a marriage on the rocks. The characters are believable, with interesting quirks and convincing motivations. The plot is well-paced, the environmental changes largely believable, and the ending comes as a surprise. There are a few repetitive passages, but overall this is a very promising debut novel!

As a sci-fi fan whose main literary turn-ons are completely original concepts and mysterious elements, I savored this story. I was fascinated by the world the author created, and this book really got and left me thinking. A deeply satisfying read.

The Tree Museum's unique premise had me hooked from the beginning, although it is a genre I do not read often. The characters were intriguing and the story compelling. This book by Kathleen Kaufman is a great form of escapism that also inspires self reflection.

The Tree Museum is the debut novel from an author who no doubt has a bright future ahead of her. The story is not only phenomenal, keeping the reader on the edge of the seat in anticipation of what will happen next, but it also has more layers and complexities than one might think. I found myself re-examining a lot of my own convictions about utopias and dystopias and the gray areas in between. Uncovering all of the characters' idiosyncrasies is only part of the fun. Do not miss out on the opportunity to experience this triumphant novel.

The Tree Museum,

The Tree Museum was a good read. There were a couple of moments that it felt repetative, but the last half of the book is gripping. The idea that it takes an unknow entity to make the people of this planet behave and do whats right isn't new but definitely done interestingly here. By far a very good debut.

What a surprise!,
This review is from: The Tree Museum (Paperback)
What a pleasant surprise to discover this new author! A friend passed along their copy of this new book, and I was delighted! How rare to discover a new author with such a distinctive voice! From the first few pages, I was interested in the unique characters and unusual concept, and my interest was held throughout. Consistantly surprising and creative! If you like the style of Kurt Vonnegut Jr. or Richard Brautigan, you will probably also enjoy this! Bravo!

Tree Museum was a joy to read. Kathleen Kaufman creates a wonderful story of possibilities in the sci-fi world. From the love of Rosemary to the many voices inside the head of Nate, it is finally a different type of sci-fi. Would not be surprised at all if this were made into a movie.
Grab it. Read it. Enjoy the twists and chords. |
