This bowl is simply beautiful. After you oil it, it will turn a deeper, almost reddish brown. It is one solid piece of wood and makes a nice decorative fruit bowl, but it is not too heavy to use for a salad or serving bowl. I was amazed to find this nice item for such a reasonable price. You do need to oil it with mineral oil occasionally, depending on how often it is washed and used, but it is easy to do. As the instructions note, be sure to use mineral oil, not vegetable oil for this in order to avoid rancidity. The oils you use for salads will be cleaned off when you wash the bowl, but the mineral oil will remain absorbed into the wood.
