Lovely book of historical fiction, December 22, 2005
This review is from: Tree of freedom (Paperback)
We homeschool, so perhaps our children have higher standards than the first reviewer (whose highly negative and ill-judged review, incidentally, is no longer here, so my comments have lost much of their context), but my girls all enjoyed this book when they were around ten years old. It's a delightful story of another time, an important time in our nation's history. The characters are lively, courageous, and fun. The book is old fashioned in a sweet way. Highly recommended.
However, if your child isn't a reader, has a short attention span, and does not enjoy older books with more complex syntax and detailed descriptions, this would not be a good book to start him or her on the road to reading.

Accents? What accents., May 31, 2005
This review is from: Tree of freedom (Paperback)
I have some advantages over some of the other reviewers. One, I read this because I wanted to. Two, the book has revelance to me. I'm a southern gal. The dialect in the book is more true to life than most of the fake jibberish you hear on TV. Three, I can put names to ancestors who lived through experiences like those in the book. It made me pause to think what one, small item I would choose if I had to leave my home. Four, I have a vegetable garden. I shudder to think of the huge amount of work it would take to carve a garden for my family's survival out of raw forrest with a few hand tools.
The book wasn't as gripping as I hoped but it did give me a glimpse into the life and concerns of families in the wilderness while the wilderness was still wild.
