Editorial Reviews

Product Description

If you enjoy Gil Evans or Maria Schneider s jazz orchestras, you will
LOVE this homage to nature.
Gorgeous, fluid, melodic compositions for large jazz ensemble.
Features trumpeter Ingrid Jensen.

Review

While she s influenced by the lavish and sensual arrangements of Maria
Schneider and Gil Evans, Christine adds something deeper and often
darker to the mix ... full of amazing changes and charts where solos are an
outgrowth of the innovative compositions. --Montreal Gazette

As the younger generations say when describing someone who's got it going on, Christine Jensen has skills. Her arrangements are mesmerizing. The musicianship displayed by her ensemble is razor sharp and consistent. I heard the first cut, "Dancing Sunlight," on a local NPR jazz program and raced to Amazon to download the CD. I didn't have to listen to the samples countless times to see if I would like it because I knew from my hearing of that one cut that I would love it. This CD is a gift. I look forward to spending many the hour going on this fantastic voyage with Ms. Jensen. Shalom!

At the outset, the listener might think that this album is one of Maria Schneider Orchestra's, but soon there emerges a greater drive, an edginess, and stronger horns. Joel Miller and Chet Doxas are the tenor saxophones and other reeds, but soon the trumpet of Ingrid Jensen is heard. Indeed, while it is Jensen's lyrical trumpet and fluegelhorn why I purchased this album, learning about her sister Christine was a happy surprise, for she is band leader, arranger, and sometime soprano saxophonist. The 19-members of the Christine Jensen Jazz Orchestra, based in Montreal, Canada, perform rich, well thought-out compositions whose titles are of nature, mainly trees; hence the title of the album. The works are composed with sonority, instrumental conversatons, and contrasts. They are full of melody and brightness as well as complex depth, beauty, and a touch of funk; yet, there is some inconsistency and the slower pieces at times seem to lose their way. Guitars, piano, upright bass and drums support a bevy of trumpets and trombones. This big band album has 75 minutes of intelligent jazz arrangements. O Canada!

As is also a truth, in my opinion, about her latest release, 'Habitat,' Christine Jensen expresses her gifts as a player, composer, arranger, and leader on this release. Just beautiful, and a very strong effort and performance by all.

Jazz orchestration is not my thing. I was not familiar with Christine Jensen's music but was charmed by a review I read in DownBeat. I am sure many folks would like her music. It's just not my thing.
