I first heard of Joyce Kilmer when I was about 13, when I encountered his poem,"Trees", in an collection of 20th century poetry. At the time, I knew nothing of Kilmer, so I asked about him. I heard that he was a British soldier, a bachelor who wrote poetry in the early years of the 20th century. For some reason, I didn't look into him until I found this book. The depth of his"Old Poets" and (of course) "Trees" encouraged me, as a young poet, to remember why I fell in love with poetry to begin with. And, by the way, I am proud to name him as a fellow American, who served his country and his wife and 5 children to the last. I am glad to find some one who shares my views, for the most part, and enjoyed this edition immensely. Now, to find a good hard-cover copy.:/ P.S Check out his essays. They are humorous, and some are very thought provoking.

On the whole, the book was beautiful. Emotionally moving at all times. Inspiring. "Trees" is one of Kilmer's best known peices, but the gems glowing within the rest of these pages are priceless. "Poets", "To A Young Poet Who Killed Himself", "Love's Lantern", "Vision", "As Winds That Blow Against A Star", "Citizen Of The World", "The House With Nobody In It", 24 more. His humble honesty, incredible insight, and several works dedicated to his wife, Aline, move you to feel yourself within the pages. Truly a work of a master in his realm of truth. A must read for any poetry lover.

I tried this book because I wanted to read the poem "Trees" that I kind of remembered from my childhood. There was much more to the poem than I had thought and I also enjoyed reading the other poems. Many of them I had not read before and I found them fascinating. They are older poems and they painted vivid pictures in my mind of the things the authors wrote about. Well worth taking the time to read. I am going to memorize the poem of the title "Trees" so that I can enjoy it over and over again.

Plato said, "There is beauty in simplicity".
The poems of Joice Kilmer are simple and beautiful.
Sad that he died so young.

I remember reading some of these poems in high school. (MANY YEARS AGO!)
It was good to reread some of the poems I had forgotten.

This volume contains the excellent Trees poem. So it is definitely a recommended read, although I did not like the other poems. A bio of Kilmer would probably be a good read.

I have never seen such fine poetry ever before in my life. The simple poems fascinate me, and they have definitely strengthened my bonds with poetry and God. 6/5 stars.
