If you're interested in providing habitat for birds, this is a good resource...but if you're interested in preserving habitat for birds, ignore the invasive plants listed. I had assumed that an updated version of any book wouldn't list plants that are among those invading our natural areas! Even if these plants do provide nesting areas and food, they ultimately lead to a decrease in habitat as the invasive plants, such as multiflora rose, displace native plants. (For lists of invasive plants, check out www.invasive.org and other websites.) The book sometimes cautions to keep these plants under control, but why contribute to further problems when there are so many great native plants? Seeing these plants listed in a book that was updated so recently was very disappointing. Use this book cautiously - the information presented is very useful and well-organized. Before planting any of the plants listed, though, verify that it isn't invasive in your area.
