More significantly, the i.Beat organix's 512 MB of flash memory stores enough music for almost any workout or commute--up to eight hours of MP3 and 16 hours of WMA files. The device is no slouch from a playback perspective, either, with such options as repeat play (one or all songs), shuffle, repeat shuffle, folder, repeat folder, and resume. And navigation couldn't be easier thanks to the folder storage system and the four-line, two-color OLED display, which offers a 128 x 64 pixel resolution.

Though the i.Beat organix is primarily designed for music, the unit also functions as a mobile storage device, with the ability to hold text files, small photos, and other data. Listeners will also dig the integrated voice recorder, which lets them record voice notes, lectures, and interviews in MP3 format for later use. The unit even offers a line-in jack for recording from an external source, such as a CD player or cassette deck. And should the music playback get a little tired by itself, you can turn on one of the dynamic visualization effects, which pulse to the beat of the music.

Other details include SRS WOW surround sound effects; 11 predefined equalizer settings (auto EQ, user-defined, dance, eXtreme bass, jazz, classical, live, normal, pop, reggae, rock, SRS, and techno); settable play speeds; support for ID3 tagging; a text viewer that displays TXT files; a digital clock with an alarm, stopwatch, and sleep timer; a pair of headphone jacks to accommodate two listeners at once; and a high-speed USB 2.0 interface.

The i.Beat organix--which comes with a set of Sennheiser headphones and a copy of Magix MP3 Maker SE music administration software--is compatible with Windows 98 SE, M3, 2000, and XP, Mac OS X 10.3.x, and Linux Kernel 2.4.x operating systems. The powerful lithium-polymer battery, meanwhile, charges via the USB connection and runs for roughly 25 hours per charge. The entire unit is backed by a one-year warranty.

PROs: Versatile gadget. Lots of recording time.

CONs: Cannot delete files unless you have a computer with loaded software to manipulate files on mp3 player. Also due to multiple functions of buttons, it is easy to make mistakes.
