4.0 out of 5 stars Detailed Description of the Desert Section of the PCT
This book really describes the experience of walking the first 700 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail in great detail, punctuated by moments of humor and strange situations. My only complaint is that it is a bit long, but a good read nonetheless for anyone considering hiking this section or the whole trail.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hiking adventure of Harold Margolis
As one who loves the PCT and has made mostly day-hikes from Campo to Cottonwood Pass over several decades, I was somewhat disappointed that the author had not made a through-hike over that same part of the PCT, and in fact had skipped some of it in favor of motor transits. As one who loves the PCT and has made mostly day-hikes from Campo to Cottonwood Pass over several decades, I was somewhat disappointed that the author had not made a through-hike over that same part of the PCT, and in fact had skipped some of it in favor of motor transits. Those few parts that I had been unable to hike because of the long distances between trail-heads were of special interest to me, but turned out to be unrevealing--maybe I hadn't missed anything! Descriptions of flora and fauna were pretty general, esp. the flora, and so not very instructive. Finally, the book needed an editor--lots of grammatical and spelling errors and typos. I suspect the book is of most value to the author and his family as a memoire of a rather long vacation trip.
