3.0 out of 5 stars Great content, buggy app May 16, 2012
Verified Purchase
I've been looking at the book version of this for several years but just never took the plunge to buy it. So for half price on my phone I decided to finally give it a try. There's a lot of info packed into this app, the design is well done. Nice clean easy to navigate interface.

But there is 2 issues that are becoming quite annoying. First if you exit the app any way other than hitting back multiple times and confirming you want to exit via the pop up, next time you go to use it, it will crash, every time. Get a call, crash.. Hit home to check a text crash. I tend to multi task, and like just hitting the home button, do something else real quick and be able to come back to where I was without having to completely shut down the app every time.

Second issue is with the bookmarks, quite often they bring you to the beginning of the section instead of where they should. Backing out to the menu and selecting the bookmark again usually works.

Overall I'm happy with the purchase. The quality of the content justified the price for me, hopefully the few issues can get fixed in an update. If so this would be a 5 star app.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional! Don't Go Without It June 2, 2013
By Peggy A

"SAS Survival Guide" is a best-selling book that has been converted to an app. It is an extremely successful translation from the page to an app, and it is practical, informative and fun. When extensively testing the app on June 2, 2013, I did not experience any technical issues at all, so the latest update must have fixed the bugs noted by another reviewer. UPDATE: If you run into problems, the developers offer an e-mail address at which you can contact them for technical support. The e-mail address is listed at the bottom on the product description page on Amazon.

The color and smart main page allows you to choose from one of nine icons.

1. Essentials
2. Camp
3. Polar
4. Sea Coast
5. Desert Tropics
6. Wild Food
7. Hunting
8. First Aid
9. Urban

Each icon provides a comprehensive and detailed discussion regarding the topic at hand. The First Aid section, for example, provides, "From basics to serious wounds, fractures, traumas and diseases, plus a guide to medicinal plants." The Wild Food section gives you, "A comprehensive field guide to nutrition and food foraging, with galleries of edible and poisonous plants, roots, fruit, nuts and mushrooms."

The information contained is very valuable, and it is supplemented by multiple formats of additional information. There are interesting encyclopedia-style text narratives with educational information, including statistics, such as how many calories are produced by different types of foods, and the calorie consumption process. There are navigation icons within the text that very user friendly, such as an up and down arrow, a button that will make the text larger or small with one press, and the ability to bookmark items.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Special Air Service delivers June 2, 2013
Verified Purchase
This app contains EVERYTHING you need to know about survival.
Whether it's building a shelter, using a sun compass, or finding food and water, or protecting yourself from foul weather and much more, it delivers.
I'm amazed that this treasure of information works offline with less than 50MB to download.
I recommend to study it thoroughly before going on an adventure because you may not be able to charge your phone or tablet ;)
Wiseman lives up to his name.
Unless you encounter a Zombie apocalypse, you're ok.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great content. June 1, 2013
Verified Purchase
As a previous reviewer noted, this book app does have a couple of issues when reopening it or using bookmarks. However, I believe the overall content and design of the information merits getting and keeping this publication. The only reason I give it 4 out of 5 stars are those two issues.

This app covers many useful survival concepts that may prove invaluable in many situations from urban to wilderness. It is also a good primer on general camping concepts on everything from backpacks, shoe selection, to places to set up camp. It gives a good overview on wild foods and hunting (cleaning game for the not-so-squeamish). The basic first aid section and emergency Morse code flasher are exceptional bonuses that make this app a great survival tool and worth having.

I would like to see this app expanded in the future (I would gladly pay for an even more comprehensive version). Don't get me wrong, this app has plenty of information, videos, and pictures already. I just would like it to have more information on mapless and improvised navigation techniques, expanded water purification and filtration, and an expansion of primitive skills and shelters. Since general camping and basic survival skills parallel in many ways, this app should have a broad appeal to many people. All emergency management agencies recommend disaster preparedness. This app helps in that and does much to cross over as a camping guide. Why not take your family on a camping trip and combine a practice in a few survival skills as well? It may provide some entertainment for your kids, teach them something beyond school, and be the reason they survive the next disaster. Oh, don't forget to take your Kindle and this app.
