5.0 out of 5 stars ...and welcome to New Orleans! November 12, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The soundtrack to season 1 of David Simon's new series Treme captures the soul of the show and the spirit of New Orleans. If you watched the first season, you'll know that this show is just as much about the music of New Orleans as it is about the city's enduring people, who lost everything in Hurricane Katrina and came back to rebuild the city they loved.

This soundtrack is filled with songs celebrating New Orleans and its vibrant culture. It's no mistake that if you close your eyes you could imagine walking down the New Orleans streets hearing each of these songs coming out of one club after another as you pass by. That's because many of these recordings are the same live recordings seen in the show. With the exception of four tracks, all songs were recorded in 2009 and 2010, contemporary to the recording of the first season and, as I said, in many cases the exact same recordings that appear in the show's numerous live concert scenes. That also means that you don't just get standards like the Rebirth Brass Band, Kermit Ruffins, Dr. John, or Allen Toussaint...you also get the actors' performances from the show, including Steve Zahn's (Davis McAlary) campaign song "Shame Shame Shame," Lucia Micarelli (Annie) duetting with pianist Tom McDermott on Jelly Roll Morton's "New Orleans Blues," and Wendell Pierce (Antoine Batiste) taking over vocals on "I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You." The music rolls through New Orleans' history and connects past generations with the present, whether it's Trombone Shorty and James Andrews recording their grandfather Jessie Hill's "Ooh Poo Pah Doo," Irma Thomas re-recording her classic "Time is on My Side" with Allen Toussaint, or Steve Earle writing and recording his new Emmy-nominated track "This City" specifically at David Simon's request. New Orleans connects all and welcomes all through the indelible and irresistible power of its musical spirit.

If you want to get a slice of New Orleans' and Treme's musical culture, pick up this disc. You'll get a crash course in (mostly) contemporary New Orleans jazz recordings, which after the devastation of Katrina makes each song all the more poignant. The liner notes contain some information about the recording of the show and background of the music, and the track listing contains all the same descriptions of each song as Amazon has listed above, which will help you understand and enjoy the songs a little more. So do yourself a favor: pick up this CD, pop it in, close your eyes, and imagine walking through New Orleans hearing each of these songs being played just for you as you pass.

3.0 out of 5 stars Where's the Rest? July 23, 2011
By JB

It's a great show. It's great music. That said, for a show based on music, a one disc soundtrack simply wasn't sufficient. When I listened to it, it felt incomplete, and I was pining for some of the series' most memorable songs.

"Wish Someone Would Care" was the title of an episode but the song was left out. Despite them being stars, there are really only two Sonny and Annie songs here; their macabre duet and their sarcastic rendition of "Saints" are missing. Despite three versions of "Indian Red" being included, the classic version that plays over a montage scene in the show is missing. There's no Cajun music. You could fill another disc with songs that I remember that they left out without even having to go back and rewatch the show. All in all, it could have been a two or even three-disc album.

My conclusion is that if you're a fan of the show you should obviously buy it, but let them know they should release more stuff in the future.

We enjoyed the music in Treme but didn't know a lot about it. This is a compliation of the music. Serious students of New Orleans Jazz probably would be happy with it. Read more
