I'd go home, but I'm a stranger there,

My wife and I recently saw these guys open for Mason Jennings at First Avenue in Minneapolis. About two songs into the set, we just looked at each other and nodded. It's rare that I get very excited for an opening act, but this is definitely a band I'll go see on their own.
Tremolo quickly became a favorite in our collection. The lyrics tend toward the brooding side, for my taste, but are backed up by a lively shuffle beat and tactful acoustic instrumentation. The album opens with a great one-two punch in "Pray Tell" and "Heart and Bones". Other gems are sprinkled throughout, like "Skipper and His Wife" -- one of those sweet, laid-back songs you don't mind hearing over and over. Hope these guys keep making great music and get rich doing it.

I picked this one up after hearing the song "Skipper and His Wife." Unlike the other reviews on here, I haven't had the privelage of hearing them in concert. However, I was more than pleased with what I heard on the album. At times their songs are almost too subtle, somehow gliding by without grabbing you, but the songwriting here works well enough so that never really completely happens. They've got some delta blues in them and obviously some folk.
"Shiny Shoes," "Behind the Times" and "Heart and Bones" are just three of the best songs on here. They are all good though, but if you want to hear the best of what this album is about, the songs mentioned in this review are a good place to start. KEY TRACK: "Heart and Bones"

The Pines may be my new favorite group. They have an amazing sound that is both soothing and invigorating. I highly recommend seeing them live if you get the chance!

Rarely does a band sound as good on a cd as they do live....this band is an exception. I can't say enough good things about their music. From the music to the lyrics, they are an all around great band. I highly advise you listen and enjoy!
