5.0 out of 5 stars some great early tracks
This anthology is mainly the original Wailers recordings of the 1960's. If you think this will be mainstream Bob Marley and the Wailers tunes form Legend that simply is not the case. This anthology focuses on the early days of the Wailers and is a nice place to start if you really like the Catch a Fire and Burnin' albums. As early as those 2 albums are, the material on...

3.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the Editorial Review...
While the list of tracks above are, in fact, the program's contents, the "Editorial Review" is a description of an entirely different product. It SAYS 4-discs, but it's 2 and that's that. So, for what it actually is it's a nice "anthology" of Bob and the Wailers' Trojan Records material. If you think you recognize some song titles, that's them, but these versions are a...

As early as those 2 albums are, the material on this anthology is even older than that but still just as good. Early songs of the Wailers are what got me hooked onto the reggae sound and eventually turned me into a Wailers addict. If you would like to learn how this band started out, this anthology is a great brief introduction.

If you think you recognize some song titles, that's them, but these versions are a little more raw, the sound quality is typical of or better than the 60's/70's Jamaican sound, and in some cases the arrangements are different from the versions most people are familiar with on the Island Records label. This is definitely for the fan of Bob Marley's "early music", though it IS an anthology and spans a broad phase of his and the band's career. It's a pretty sweet collection of music, but if you've bought some of the "bootleg" product or "early music" collections you MIGHT have a number of these tracks already.
I was just kind of thrown off by the description listing four discs, there's only TWO with a total of fifty-one tracks...all of them sweet stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars repply to this guy below from a mastering engineer., September 20, 2004
This review is from: Trench Town Rock (Audio CD)

remastering is tricky and people here tends to talk to much with out knowing what is exactly happening, you're giving this album a low rate because the mastering engineer and trojan records decided to stick to the truth with this recordings.
wich have always been noisy and lo fi. This is the true sound!!!!!
you'll never get hi fi out of lo fi, you have to enjoy them the way they were done. de-noising this recordings means also killing the original hi end, and faking it with eq.
if you buy original bob marley you have to understand that it was noisy ,that the studios in jamaica where precarious and they were not in to hi fi. that is the beauty of this recordings.they outstand over the adverse environment where they were produced.
a re-master that dennies the reality of a song that has been a hit for 30 years is a bad remaster

5.0 out of 5 stars THE Lee Perry-era Bob Marley Collection You Must Own., July 27, 2005
By
This review is from: Trench Town Rock (Audio CD)
When dimunitive mad genius Lee "Scratch" Perry started producing Bob Marley at the end of the '60s, he pretty much catalyzed his transformation from enjoyably competent ska/reggae performer to simply one of the finest musical artists of the 20th century.

To date, this is the definitive collection of their often contentious, though undeniably fertile work together. This generous 2-disc set comprises the best moments (and indeed most of the tracks) from the African Herbsmen, Soul Rebels and Rasta Revolution albums in addition to a clutch of extremely rare (and of course wonderful) early tracks such as the delicate and lovely disc one opener, "Adam and Eve".

For my money and despite the claims of some, the remastering is excellent, exuding the scratchy warmth of dusty old vinyl. My one minor complaint is with the liner notes, which are somewhat difficult to read and could have been far more expansive. Again, this is a minor quibble and should not detract from enjoying this stellar collection of a major artist discovering both his voice and his unique vision.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, December 24, 2007
This review is from: Trench Town Rock (Audio CD)
Collection of the Wailers work with Lee Perry. Great music, great musicians, great producer. One reviewer mentioned the quality was terrible, but I didn't really hear any song that was bad. Some sounded a little tinny, but that's to be expected. A must for any reggae collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great compilation album, July 5, 2006
This review is from: Trench Town Rock (Audio CD)
I got this album on vinyl last year for my birthday courtesy of my brother. I love the old feel and sounds of this compilation. This album is the gem of my vinyl collection and I take care of it very much. I especially love to clean my apartment while listening to the whole album. Before I know, I am on vinyl three, the six side. This is a must have for the serious Bob Marley fan. My next step is to buy on CD for my car trips.

All the songs here are great and the harmonies that the Wailers add are just impressive. My favorite song is Thank You Lord, with its appreciative spirituality for the Lord. Bob Marley wrote many of his great songs during this early period, some of these he would re-record when Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer left to form their groups.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Songs!, Questionable Remastering :(, April 3, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Trench Town Rock (Audio CD)
51 songs on two discs, what a collection! There are songs on these discs that can be difficult to find anywhere else. However, my gripe is the remastering of these songs is questionable at best. For instance, the song Trenchtown Rock has an audible hiss. I have that same version of Trenchtown Rock on a cd from a Canadian distribution whose remastering is excellent. No hiss and the levels are perfect. I noticed this lack of quality in the MAJORITY of the songs. Yes I understand these songs are old but any knowledgeable recording engineer can get rid of hissing and balance the levels properly.
If you are an audiophile like myself you might be disapointed in the quality, but certainly not in the songs themself. See for yourself, look for cds made by St.Clair Entertainment (Canada) and compare their quality to these discs made by Trojan/BMG.
