Book Description

In the Trenches January 15, 2000
Linux is a reliable, open-source operating system that runs on a variety of hardware, and is inexpensive if not free. Whether networking a department or lashing together servers for a Web site, more and more IT professionals are choosing Linux as the solution, and they must get up to speed quickly. Installing and Administering Linux helps network professionals bridge the gap between their prior experience on Windows NT-, NetWare-, and UNIX-based networks and Linux. In a fast-paced, reference style, the authors focus on topics, concepts, and commands for readers with a working knowledge of networking. The Publisher's Edition of Red Hat Linux 6.2 is included on a CD-ROM. Additional technical information and value-added resources are available to readers at the publisher's Web site.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Linux has emerged as a credible competitor to Windows and UNIX as the infrastructure for mission-critical applications requiring a robust network that operates at peak performance. Its acceptance has been fastest in the Web server market, but other industries, such as financial services, are seriously evaluating Linux, and many companies have already invested in it. In the Trenches: Installing and Administering Linux will introduce readers to Linux, guide them to proficiency by leveraging their knowledge of UNIX, and serve as a long-lasting reference.

Took me a while to find a book that spoke my language. I took a course a while ago and this book covers and explains the topics in greater detail. Good work resource.

4.0 out of 5 stars Installing and Administering Linux, November 14, 2000
This review is from: In the Trenches: Installing and Administering Linux (With CD-ROM) (Paperback)
After picking up the November edition of the Linux Journal I found an article for the "In the Trenches" series of Linux publications by Linda and Al McKinnon. At a local Linux users group meeting, I ran into a fellow bithead who had seen the new offering as well. I bought the book (Installing and Administering Linux). This is the first and best resource that I have had to clarify the foundation for adding productive and manageable Linux boxes into my existing NT/SUN/AS400 environment. No B.S. Just the goods needed. Not for the faint of heart. Microsoft Beware!
