I bought PC-cillin 2003 to replace a McAfee product which was worse than useless (it took *forever* to initialise each time my Windows 2000 system was rebooted and locked up many processes while you were waiting for it to decide - after many minutes - to continue.) PC-cillin 2003 doesn't have that problem, at least. It appears to be quite a competent product and has a few...

I knew choosing between Norton 2003 and PC-Cillin 2003 was always going to be difficult. I decided to download the demo versions of both for a week just to see how they will fair. In the end it was clear that PC-Cillin was the right antivirus for me. It had the edge over Norton on 3 issues.

1. PC-Cillin uses far little CPU compared to Norton.

2. Norton flunked the Eicar virus file test ... when it came to downloading an infected zip file. This is because of Norton's inability to detect viruses in an archived file. Only after downloading and manually scanning did it detect the virus test file. PC-Cillin, no problems, it detected the virus in the archive at download time.

3. I was unable to download Norton's antivirus definitions through their LiveWire service. I had to manually download and install the updates. With PC-Cillin, the automated update worked flawlessly. It detected that the server hosted newer components and requested to proceed with the update.

With these key issues in mind, I opted for PC-Cillin 2003 and I'm yet to be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast, accurate and almost daily auto updates, April 1, 2003
This review is from: PC-cillin 2003 (CD-ROM)
I've been using PC-Cillin for 3 years, the best thing about this product is that it is almost invisible to your machine, doesn't slow down your machine or clutter your memory like Norton or McAfee, and is much faster in scanning. In several cases it caught new viruses in the same day of their release, while the same files where passed by Norton and McAfee! They update the software many times a month sometimes more than once a day, excellent support response time too. Only one problem in this particular version Pc-cillin 2003 firewall is that you can't use it if you have two machines sharing the same ISDN connection with the software on the gateway, as it blocks the ports for the slave PC so it will not see the net behind this firewall. It worked perfectly in the earlier version Pc-cillin 2002 though. Still, the BEST and most accurate virus checker in the market in my opinion. Get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Looking for a Superior Alternative To McAffe and Norton?PC.., October 17, 2003
This review is from: PC-cillin 2003 (CD-ROM)
Ahh. Being a former McAfee user, and recent Norton Anti-Virus supporter, I couldn't handle it any longer. Norton and McAfee WERE both good products, but they've turned into companies out for money and could care less about the customer. I deleted my Norton Antivirus when it didn't detect 3 trojans and 3 viruses!!!! PC-Cillins web site did. When it detected them, I looked where they were located to verify this for myself and they were there... I left them on my computer to do a test... I scanned my PC with Norton's online scanner (which is supposed to be uptdated daily) and my Norton hardware. Both FAILED to detect this. One of the trojans was transmitting my web activities to some server!!! When I contacted Norton, they said 'We did delete it, but only part to make it inactive' Well, recording my web activity is not inactive.

This is a low memory consuming program allowing your optimum performance!!!!

PC-Cillin is the Best choice for the novice and experienced user. Your getting a superior product with daily updates and excellent customer service. If you have NAV or McAffee, you need to delete it now and get another virus software vendor. PC=Cillin is an excellent choice. PC-Cillin is proving to be NAV and McAfee's up and coming rival. That happens when you stop caring about customers, and your rivals start.

You can't go wrong with this product.!!

Beware of the horror review of NAV and Mcafee all over the net. NAV is a resource hog and they have less than adequate customer service (its almost not customer service, just make sure the customer has paid and we're happy and could care less service).
McAfee has bad service and is expensive as hell. After buying for 49.00 or downloading for the same price, you get charged another 39.00 for subcription service. Boo. But they do need money to advertise to fool more people into wasting their money on their product. PC-Cillin is my new choice, and I recommend it to anyone who want to safeguard their credit cards, and any information you have or have ever typed in your computor. Its all there... PC-Cillin protects you from it.

Oh yeah, PC-Cillin comes with a firewall. It blocks hackers from even knowing you're on the net. NAV offers one... for another 49.00. McAfee does too, for another 49.00. PC-Cillian's is included !!!

You cant go wrong with this program.

5.0 out of 5 stars Upgrading from PC-cillin 2002, December 29, 2002

My Sony computer came with Pc-cilin 2002 last year and I thought it was some kind of cheapie antivirus program bundled with the computer. Having been a Norton AV user for years I figured I'd probably have to delete it and get Norton for full protection. As I used the computer over a period of time I really began to like this anti virus software. There is no way I will ever go back to Norton, which my main complaints with are that it was often the cause of system crashes and updating the virus definitions was a pain. PC-cillin has the best automatic updating of virus definitions going. Periodically, maybe once a week or so, when you turn on your computer you get a message from PC-cillin that it can download the latest virus definitions for you - click yes and you're up-to-date! It has also caught several viruses through the year so I know it works! This program is easy to use, automatically updates and won't crash your system!

This is a great program, but it will not load properly if you previously used Norton Anti-Virus or Internet Security.

The normal uninstall process will not remove all Symantec files from your computer (this has been a serious problem with Symantec from the beginning). In the case of Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Internet Security, the remaining files will conflict with Trend Micro's products. To remove them, go to Symantec's website and download a file named "RnisUPG.exe". Run it, and it will remove the offending files.

PC-cillin 2003 combines anti-virus protection with a firewall. Trend Micro has recently upgraded it by adding anti-spam and spyware protection and renamed it PC-cillin Internet Security 2004. Same price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Know what you're doing!, November 28, 2003
This review is from: PC-cillin 2003 (CD-ROM)
I bought PC-cillin 2003 largely based on the glowing reviews on this site. I had used Norton on Windows 2000 for almost 2 years but had recently upgraded to Windows XP and after reading the reviews of the latest Norton on this site I got scared off.

PC-cillin was shipped very quickly. My initial installation on Windows XP had a problem with running Update and generated a cryptic error code. I couldn't find any documentation about this error code. I assumed that I had to reboot (is this true?) and after I rebooted I got the same error. However, magically the product then started to connect and update without any intervention!! So you can imagine how pleased I was to be up and running.

Soon, however, when I used Windows Explorer to go to my downloads directory my machine froze with CPU at 99%. I killed Explorer and tried again - same thing! Well, since I knew it had to be PC-cillin because this had never happened before, I started to think about why this was happening. Then, while poking around in the configuration screens it occurred to me that my downloads directory contains a number of very large ZIP files. So I figured out that PC-cillin was opening up every ZIP file and then checking each file for viruses! So I used the configuration tools to disable checking of ZIP files and rebooted again. This worked! Now I am up and running and the product already caught 3 viruses trying to come in through Eudora mail.

The lesson learned is you have to be persistent and understand the principals behind the virus checking. That way, if you get a severe problem you at least have a clue what to do.

I purchased the Home Edition McAfee 7.0 that wreaked "Major Havoc" with my system. I had to yank out the McAfee in a week and I had Amazon expedite me PC-cillin 2003.
I took a shot.
After the awful experience with McAfee, I was reluctant to buy even Nortons... then I found Trend Micro and PC-cillin.
Installation was a snap and it does not interfere with my PC like the McAfee. A very nice product!

I use PC-Cillin at work, our IS guys like it over every other package.

I had been using MacAfee Anti-Virus here at home, but it has become cumbersome, and now they want me to pay for another year.

Sorry, MacAfee. I'll still keep and use the QuickClean, but the 4-minute boot cycle from Anti-Virus is wearing on my patience.

I have found PC-Cillin reasonably easy to update, (I'm on a dialup) plus I can schedule its scans for when I'm not on the machine. It stays out of the way, and only does what you want it to do, when you want it to do it. What more can one say?

5.0 out of 5 stars SoCal User, October 14, 2003

I shopped around a lot before deciding on an anti-virus package. The reviews read here on Amazon about PC-cillin influenced me to purchase the product, knowing full well the popularity of Norton, which was originally my first choice. I've never heard of PC-cillin, and boy am I sure glad I purchased it. Installation was a breeze, and it doesn't slow my computer down. Luckily I had purchased PC-cillin about two weeks before the Sobig virus occurrence, which had wrecked havoc on other computers in my area. My work place was bombarded by sobig, (and we use Norton at work), and it didn't do half as good a job in detecting the viruses. I've even recommended it to my brother-in-law because his computer's software (Norton) didn't catched Sobig, which did damage to his personal computer. He's switching to PC-cillin after finding out that I didn't have any problems with viruses whatsoever.

Since having PC-cillin on my computer, it's automatically detected and updated new virus definitions, even those that come out that day like Sobig, and I've never had a single virus to date. The firewall protection is awesome too! It's definitely protected my computer in all aspects.

Two thumbs up to Trend Micro for this fabulous product! If you're debating on an anti-virus package, PC-cillin is the one to get. Forget about Norton.

PC-cillin 2003 works great with my Windows XP home edition. It doesn't take up much system resources and it can scan my complete hard drive in a reasonable amount of time. So far I have not contracted any viruses or had any problems with PC-cillin causing any crashes or conflicts with Win XP or any other software. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone.
