Great protection but S..L..O..W....., December 30, 2007
I had Trend Micro PC-Cillin 2005 and thought it was great, once I managed to get a working serial number to register it, but then my employer made me install Symantec anti-virus, which I was never happy with. Finally, several months ago and one new employer later, I upgraded my old TM 2005 to TM 2008 and while I definitely feel more protected, the security comes at a price.
I have the TM 2008 loaded onto a high-end Sony Vaio that is about a year and a half old. The TM protection is great -- immediately after loading it the program caught 13 threats that the Symantec program had missed (not to mention that several internet diagnostic programs had missed them as well). TM is easy to configure -- you'll probably have to tell it not to notify you everytime it stops a potential threat, or you'll be receiving non-stop notifications. It catches viruses, spyware, adware -- pretty much everything you don't want on your computer -- without interfering or conflicting with any other programs you may be running. The protection is the best.
Now for the negatives. This baby is slow. Really slow. The lag time to connect to the internet is like connecting via dial-up. E-mail takes forever to load. Every program on my computer that requires interaction with the internet takes at least 10 times as long, although happily it doesn't interfere with other programs such as Word or non-interactive games. But it is definitely frustrating having to wait after getting used to the quick response times I normally get with a high-speed DSL connection. One other and potentially more serious problem is that when I try to update my protection the program tells me I am not connected to the internet. I sent customer service an inquiry and got a very fast response. The recommended fix worked, but you have to be fairly comfortable with Windows to do it, so if you aren't comfortable with computers, this could be a problem, one that never happened with TM 2005, nor was the 2005 version this slow. Unlike some people, however, I've never had a problem with Trend Micro's customer service as long as I use e-mail or internet chat. Phone contact is a little more difficult, but no worse than a lot of tech companies.
In short, I'm not going to replace this software anytime soon since I feel more protected with it than with anything else, but I do wish Trend Micro would work out the bugs and figure out how to make this version faster. Maybe internet threats have just gotten that much worse in 3 years, but it still seems like protecting yourself shouldn't mean having to revert to dial-up type lags.

Great Product, more than I expected, October 23, 2007
First I downloaded this product to my husband's laptop. His Norton AV was expiring, and we both had SpySweeper Antispyware on our computers, and the last couple of Spysweeper updates were causing so many problems with false positives...finding cookies and quarantining them so that we had to re-enter passwords on things like our homepage and Amazon. Pain in the behind. Anyway, after uninstalling the old antispyware and antivirus, I downloaded the trial version...although rated #1 in Consumer Reports, I wanted to check it out myself. It downloaded perfectly, fast and easy, and after updating and scanning, it went to work. PLUS, there was NO CONFLICT with other programs (BitDefender was a conflict with LoJack for Laptops and never did get that resolved which is why he went to NortonAV!) I was so impressed that I ordered the Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 from Amazon, fast service, fast delivery, lowest price by $10.
When it arrived, I uninstalled all my old antispyware/antivirus programs and installed it on my desktop. I did the customized install in order to retain Windows Firewall instead of using the Trend Micro firewall (they told me that theirs might conflict with the firewall in our router, so I played it safe there). Again, smooth, easy install. I ran the program update as advised during the install, and the full scan, and it's working great. Catches things that Spysweeper and BitDefender did not catch. One of my favorite things is that it lets me manage cookies easily (not so with the others) and its spam filter works well, catching things that slipped through before. Also it's easy to configure to my liking. I have absolutely nothing to dislike about this program.
Then I uninstalled in on my husband's laptop (which went perfectly, not like Michael's complaints below) and reinstalled it from the CD. Same thing....perfect, clean, easy install.
Both computers now boot up faster than they ever have.
I'd recommend this program, but first you MUST uninstall any other antispyware/antivirus to get a clean install, (which is also true when installing any other brands of antivirus) and also disable other firewalls, or choose not to through their customize option during installation....you can't run more than one firewall, per TM technical support. BTW, right now, since the product is so new, there is a wait time if you call, but they assured me that would improve once they get past this initial new release period.
Bottom line: Highly recommend this program.

Excellent product, exceptional value, October 8, 2007
I've used prior versions of Trend's internet security (or simply anti-virus) products, and I've found them to be excellent for home and small office use. I have computers running Vista Premium, XP Pro, and XP Home, and easily loaded this version on all three machines. Ignore the reviewer who said it only worked on one computer, that's horse hockey.
How does it compare to the others? Well, most of my other experiences have been with Symantec, and I prefer Trend over Symantec. Symantec's corporate edition is excellent for the workplace, and it's saved my bacon numerous times in my past roles as a network administrator. But the home version of Symantec is just too piggish, and the latest version of Symantec's product is just plain annoying (I received a trial version with my Vista machine). I found the Symantec interface to be very unintuitive, like a badly designed web page. That finally blew itself up after 1 month, not because the trial period ran out, but because it's junk software. That inspired me to stick with the tried and true Trend Micro, and I was impressed with how much better the interface was for Trend. Incredibly easy to use and install. I recommend this to all of my friends who seem to think that internet security software is "optional" (then they call me up to come over and fix their computers).
