1.0 out of 5 stars My DOS ate my homework. January 5, 2011
Access Method:Box| Platform for Display:PC Disc|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Trend Micro Titanium was a bit of a surprise to me. One of my needs in an antivirus scan is to be able to scan multiple drives, internal and external. I do not know if this is a problem for Trend, but this time, my usual evaluation procedure produced some rather unusual results- such as trashing the OS disk and necessitating a reinstall.

At first all seemed well, the install went fine- even though it kicked off all other antivirus software, including Spybot-S&D, which is not one of the usual ones to go when installing another product.

As one begins to uninstall Spybot, it puts up a survey asking why you are uninstalling it. On the drop-down list of reasons is, "was informed of an incompatibility with Spybot S&D" (and all the other majors.) Instead of ignoring this as usual, my curiosity made me proceed. Spybot then delivers this cheeky little message:

"We were not able to reproduce the alleged incompatibility, and Trend Micro is not able to produce an explanation either.
We therefore have to assume its request to uninstall Spybot-S&D is just unfair competition."

"The Anti-Spyware Coalition defines software that uninstalls other security software as possible malware. Do you really want to
trust software that reduces your system's security to improve their shareholder value?"

"You can re-install Spybot-S&D after installing Trend Micro should you tolerate their patronizing and want to continue uninstalling

In any case, when all the hoops of the install were completed, and after much digging, I found the setting for scanning other drives. I knew my OS drive was clean, so I set it for the first data drive exclusively. The scan began in a normal manner, a progress bar, items being scanned..

2.0 out of 5 stars Not quite December 31, 2010
Access Method:Box| Platform for Display:PC Disc|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Installed this software on a brand-new, clean laptop. Caused nothing but blue screens. Could tell it was what was causing it because removed software, installed clean Windows 7. No problems. Installed Trend, blue screen indicating some of the files in Trend. Installed AVG. No problems.
Trend used to be a force to be reckoned with in the antivirus arena (I used it on all my servers and PCs for about 8 years with not one infection of virus or spyware), but it seems like Trend has fallen down or given in to companies like AVG. I've been using AVG for about the past 4 years with no infections or problems.

The laptop is a 64 bit of Windows 7, so I don't know what it would do with a 32 bit system. This software definitely needs a quality control look by the software engineers at Trend. Testing by users in the field is not really a great way to find out your software has bugs.

I installed this product in about 10 minutes. I previously removed a Bit Defender product because of annoying problems with resource utilization, the fact that it didn't seem all that effective in blocking viruses, and application firewall issues.

Since installing Titanium, the number and types of pop-up warnings it shows has been kept to a minimum. My system, 3 years old at this point though it was a high end machine in its day, runs without any appreciable latency.

You cannot tell how effective something is at protecting you from viruses until you get exposed to one, so I'm withholding one star until the system has been up and running for a few weeks or months.

1.0 out of 5 stars Must Uninstall The Competition. Bad ethics. December 7, 2011
By Pete
Access Method:Box|Platform for Display:PC Disc
My problem with Trend Micro is that it requires that you uninstall, super antispyware, MBAM, S bot, etc. It doesn't like competition. I am not going to sacrifice these excellent programs for a very average anti virus.

I wasted my money. Fortunately, it was cheap on eBay.

Oh, the times that I or my friends have downloaded a free anti-virus program, only to have it conflict with whatever anti-virus program came with the computer. The results may be that one of the other (or both) won't work; worse, the computer may crash or work more slowly.

I haven't had that problem with Trend Micro Titanium. Yes, I did remove the downloaded freeware I had been using to enhance the computer's bundled virus protection, but once I did that, there have been no problems (and I've been using this for several months now).

It installs very easily, and operates smoothly and quickly. As other reviewers have noted, there's not a whole lot of user control. This is an anti-virus program that works quietly behind the scenes, occasionally popping up to ask whether you really want to go that site or add that software. However, the unobtrusive nature of Titanium is somewhat of a drawback as well: It's difficult to determine how well it's working, what it has removed or prevented. Go ahead, brag a little, Trend Micro! That will give me more guidance about whether I want to purchase this again. If next year is anything like this year, the price is heavily discounted mid-year (perhaps earlier), but it's not worth it if yo uhave no other virus protection.

Bottom Line: A satisfactory product that does not interfere with my computer, and that seems to work well. I can say I've had fewer problems with this software than many others. There are probably more powerful (and expensive) anti-virus tools out there, but in mnay respects this seems superior to some of the freebies available for download.

I liked that I was able to buy only what I wanted for a great price. I don't like purchasing software that has extras that I don't want. I will purhase this again in the future.
