Great basic switch for home or small business,

This review is from: Trendnet TE100S8P 8-port Fast Ethernet Switch, (Personal Computers)
The TRENDware TE100-S8P is a compact, aggressively-priced, no-frills switch well-suited to home or small business use. Setup is trivial since the ports are auto-sensing as to speed (10/100) and connection type (computer or uplink). Just connect the power cord, plug in your devices with Cat5E Ethernet cables, and you're in business. Front panel indicators are clear if a bit small. The switch has underside holes for vertical surface mounting (screws not included) or you can easily attach 4 included rubber feet and sit the switch on a desk or other work surface. If you don't need more than 8 ports or remote management, this is a great choice that will be easy on your wallet!

I bought this unit to replace an old D-Link Ethernet hub. Man, what a difference. We kept the D-Link powered off most of the time when we weren't using it because the loud fan was unbearable to listen to. This Trendnet switch doesn't make any sound.
We are also getting much faster initial response times on our LAN and faster file transfers. Apparently the old D-Link hub would slow all ports down to 10 Mbps if one computer on the LAN had a 10 Mbps Ethernet card (and we had one old compouter that did). This new switch doesn't do that. The Trendnet ports are all autosensing and independent. The unit I received does not match the Amazon picture at all (as of the time of this writing) so I uploaded a couple of pictures of the unit I received. Note that the legs are kind of useless unless you want to stack more than one unit or unless you want the unit to stand vertically. I have my unit flat on my desktop, so I just discarded the legs. As another reviewer said, the unit is so light it wants to slide off the desktop. I attached a couple of small pieces of velcro to the underside and fixed that problem. There's not much else to say. You just plug the power into your power strip, plug your Ethernet cables into any ports you want on the switch and forget about it. It couldn't be easier and it works like a charm.

I bought this to add more ports to my home broadband network. Almost everything has internet access these days; TV, playstation, etc. I have run cat 5 cable to every room in the house and connected them to this switch and uplinked it to my router. Uplinking this switch couldn't be easier. With most switches, you have to use a special crossover cable or a special uplink port to add more ports to an existing network. This switch automatically detects the connection type for each port as another switch/hub/router or a PC, and automatically configures itself for that connection, using standard patch cable. The LED's are a little sparse; it only lights up to show a connection, nothing else. It does not show speed, full/half duplex, collision, etc. For most people at home or in a small business, this works great.
