excellent literary Spanish,

This is a collection of four short works by one of the leading figures of Spanish literature in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The prologue is a literary/philosophical examination of the nature of reality, which asks the question "how do we define a "real" person". It is well-written, stimulating, and includes the memorable, untranslatable aphorism "creer es crear". Like most philosophical musings (in my opinion) it is basically nonsense, but I enjoyed it as I would enjoy an abstract painting: aesthetically pleasing, but not corresponding to any actual reality. The other three pieces all concern themselves with various themes of strong passion, "love" if you will. They contain some interesting psychological insights but cannot be considered completely "realistic", in my opinion. For example, the characters have a tendency to die from mental anguish, which doesn't actually happen in the real world. However, de Unamuno argues forcefully in the prologue that the characters he portrays are actually more "real" than many "real" people. I'll let the reader decide if he's right. I don't happen to agree. Regardless of the content, the author employs a beautiful literary Spanish which is very enjoyable to read. |
