Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

These kids rock! Their "Lord Did You Hear Harrison?" is brilliant--the Stones meet the TV show Zoom on helium! Donning medical garb, symbolizing the healing essence of music, Danielson Famile are madcap Muppet-ish gospel folkies jammin' for Jesus and the hope for elevated consciousness everywhere. From one moment to the next, their sound veers from campfire sing-along to Christian vaudeville to the silliest, most-fun-ever, strummy, bouncy acoustic rock. A family affair, Danielson is big brother Daniel Smith, 26 (who birthed the band as his senior thesis at Rutgers), and younger sibs, who range in age from 14 to 23. Rounding out the combo is buddy Chris Palladino, whose organ adds psychedelic girth to the acoustic guitar and drums, which are fortified by the sisters' flute and xylophone and the blend of voices. Smith is the Daniel Johnston meets Muppet Animal meets Beck-inspired genius-savant who makes Danielson jive, jingle, and spark. --Paige La Grone

5.0 out of 5 stars Even atheists will love it, March 19, 1999
By A Customer
I have never bought a "Christian" album before, but the reviews of the Danielson Famile have been so intriguing that I couldn't help myself. The verdict? If there is a "God," he probably has a fantastic sense of humor. This album made me dance around the kitchen. The morality presented isn't shoved down the listener's throat-- indeed, I was overwhelmed by the band's new verse of "He's Got the Whole World In His Hand," in which Daniel sings, "He's got the junkies and the flunkies in his hand." Well, it sure made me feel better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, awe-inspiring fringe rock!, August 17, 2000
By Kevin Renick (St. Louis, MO.) - See all my reviews
I discovered the Danielson Family by accident, and I haven't been the same since! This is so flat-out weird and original that I'm hard pressed to summarize it. Most of the people I know would not like it because it's so strange, and because Daniel Smith's falsetto vocals are not for the aurally challenged. However, I happen to like challenging music, and this music is certainly that! The spiritual message of the music never undermines the creativity and the sonic wonders that await the open minded listener here. In fact, the Christian underpinnings give it an extra "edge." Much of this music made me laugh, some of it really touched me, and all of it made me rub my eyes in disbelief at the stunning originality. "Rubbernecker," "Pottymouth" and "Lord Did You Hear Harrison" are just totally entertaining pieces of music, Christian or not. And for those of you reading this, their album "Tell Another Joke at the Chopping Block" is even more remarkable. So praise the lord if you want, but definitely praise this fearless, endlessly imaginative group, who I recommend heartily, but ONLY to those who like odd, edgy, original rock music. You've been warned!

5.0 out of 5 stars Their best ?
I think I like this album the most, but all their album are good. Catchy good songs that took a wrong turn and ended up better songs because of it.
