4.0 out of 5 stars well made, but could use more slats, September 15, 2008

This review is from: Tri-fold Hardwood Futon Frame - Twin Size
This futon frame is pretty well made, and not too hard to put together even though I am not that handy with tools. I did use a power tool to put the screws in, and there were naturally quite a few. Without the power tool it undoubtably would have been harder to do. The directions were good, though, so there weren't any terribly muddled moments during the assembly. The assembled frame is sturdy and is pretty easy to put into recliner mode. I just wish that there were more slats, because my all-cotton futon tends to follow the dips between the slats which isn't too comfortable for sleeping. I put an inexpensive closed cell mat between the futon and the frame to help with that.

I did extensive research looking for an inexpensive, quality twin-size futon frame. I like the fact that this frame does not have slat ends sticking out on either side (the construction is very clean). I couldn't be happier with the frame. It is extremely high quality - especially for the price. I was happy to get it unfinished so I could finish it to go with my decor. It is easy to assemble, has great conversion options - chair/lounge/bed. They shipped it within the week. I'm thrilled.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love my new futon frame!, October 1, 2010
This review is from: Tri-fold Hardwood Futon Frame - Twin Size
The assembly was easy, I had one part where I wasn't sure if I was doing it correctly and I emailed KD Frames and he got right back to me with the answer to my question. I am using the frame in the lounging position for the most part and will occasionally use it as a bed. The quality of the frame is good- the bed is very sturdy and I am sure it will last a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth it, June 6, 2011

It's exactly what I expected from the description. They shipped very quickly; it was here one week from the day I ordered it. Assembly was not difficult but it took 90 minutes of mild exertion. You will need a hammer and a screwdriver. A powered screwdriver isn't necessary (I used a regular old twist-by-hand model) but it might save you a few minutes. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. I was missing one piece of hardware: a "hairpin" that locks the clevis pin in place & keeps it from sliding out of its hole. I substituted a small keyring, which will do the same job. The wood is light but strong. During assembly I was worried that the frame was going to be unstable, but once it was all put together it felt really sturdy. I agree with the other review about the slat spacing. I have a traditional cotton pad, and the first night on this frame I did not sleep well because I could feel all the slats. I dug out my old Coleman air mattress and put it under the cotton pad, and now I have a low-budget version of the "sleep number" bed. It's REALLY comfortable now; I slept like a stone the second night ... but unfortunately, with the air mattress on it, I can't fold the futon up into a chair. This doesn't bother me since I got it primarily as a bed. Eventually I will probably want to get a different pad, though.

This was the lowest-priced twin frame I could find, and it's an excellent value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works good, last long time., March 3, 2011

Very sturdy wood provided, and precisely cut. So far it's alot better looking than the metal futon chair i had before this. It was always clanking and creaking. The wood construction makes this one quiet. One thing they could add are felt pads to go on the legs and the back. I cut out some pieces because the wood is leaving scratches/dents in my vinyl tiles and the back edges are scraping the paint off my wall.

This is a terrific futon that I purchased for my 11 year old. We worked together to assemble it in a short amount of time, and it is very sturdy and fits well in the room. We purchased the single. It can be used as a bed, lounge w feet up OR down, and a seat. It is also lightweight yet seems quite sturdy. We love it! I may have to get another one.

I was hesitant to purchase this type of product without seeing it on Amazon, but I'm very pleased.

PROS. Arrived flat-packed and quickly. Put together myself. (I'm a gal comfortable with putting things together but rarely use power tools.) Wood has a solid feeling. Easy to convert to various positions shown. Looks nice (and much nicer than the plastic/metal/80's dorm room style alternatives I encountered elsewhere.)

CONS. I don't have cons per se. Two comments to consider.

1. I'm not using a traditional futon with it. Instead I have an old King-sized memory foam mattress topper folded in half and in a case, so I use it as a Twin futon. I had one guest who said they could feel the slats a bit. However, this guest was 6' 1", and I bet most people would use this frame for a real futon cushion/mattress, so this may be a function of my 'mattress' and not the frame. I slept on it and was comfortable.

2. I used Danish oil on it (a technique that made solid Alder doors in our house look nice). I wanted to get the same effect instead of using a colored wood stain and polyurethane coat. Since it is poplar and not really a wood with amazing texture to it, it turned out looking just ok. I suggest if you want to make it look nice, just go ahead and stain it the way you would a pine (or other wood where the grain is not really beautiful) instead of using just Danish oil like I did).

I truly like this futon. It was cheap, easy to put together, and the mattress that matches it is pretty comfy considering the low price.
