Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A female prosecutor is accused of murdering an old flame in Rosenberg's latest legal thriller.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Rosenberg (California Angel, LJ 12/94) has done it again. Her new work is a riveting novel with a strong feminine center. Stella Cataloni is the Dallas district attorney's top hand. Shortly after winning a highly controversial case, she is accused of murder. And so a nightmare of buried memories, false friends, unknown enemies, love betrayed, and a family in conflict begins. The only flaw in this otherwise excellent legal thriller is the characterization of Stella. Rosenberg paints her as a shrill and strident woman; a stereotypical fiery Italian beauty. Stella flies into rages and assaults any and all who do her dirty. One can only hope that our purveyors of justice are a tad calmer, cooler, and more disciplined, even when under great stress. Small cavils aside, buy plenty of copies.

More About the Author

Nancy Taylor Rosenberg is an American writer. She attended school at Gulf Park College in Gulf Port, Mississippi. She has three children, three step children, one adopted child, and currently resides in Dallas, Texas.

Rosenberg's first novel, MITIGATING CIRCUMSTANCES, was published in 1993, and the film rights were obtained by Academy Award winning director, Jonathan Demme. Rosenberg novels have been translated into almost every language. The majority of her novels have been New York Times bestsellers. MITIGATING CIRCUMSTANCES has been described as a contemporary CRIME AND PUNISHMENT.

Rosenberg is also known for her philanthropic efforts. She received national acclaim for her writing program for inner city youth,"Voice of Tomorrow". The Board of Supervisors of Orange County voted her "A Woman of Excellence, Learning for Life" in 1994. She was featured on Prime Time Live and in People Magazine for her adoption of a child with a rare, frequently terminal illness, Methylmalonic Acidemia, or MMA. A physician in France who saw the Prime Time Live episode claimed he was curing MMA patients by means of a liver transplant. At the time, the child Rosenberg adopted, Janelle Garcia, was the oldest living survivor with MMA. No one had previously lived past the age of eighteen. Janelle received both a kidney and liver transplant and is now in her early thirties, giving hope to future generations of children suffering from MMA.

Rosenberg's family and friends have nicknamed her "Lucy" as she is known for doing unusual and sometimes hilarious things. She says she never knows what to expect when she opens her refrigerator. She once found flea solution for a fifty pound dog in her freezer. She does have dogs but none of them weigh over fourteen pounds. On one occasion her husband asked her a question while she was writing and she told him she would answer him in when she finished her sentence. When she finally answered him, he told her an entire day had passed sine he had asked her the question.

1.0 out of 5 stars How can writing so bad sell so well?, June 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Trial by Fire (Paperback)
According to BOOKLIST, Nancy Taylor Rosenberg is "among the most successful authors of legal thrillers". Having just forced myself to finish her 5th novel, TRIAL BY FIRE, I cannot imagine any reason for her success. The plotting is poor, the characterization is erratic, and the writing is frankly awful. Above all, her protagonist (supposedly a bright, ambitious, and super-effective district attorney) consistently acts in ways that can only be described as immature, neurotic, ignorant, stupid, and/or unprofessional. For example, in every chapter Stella Cataloni throws a hysterical fit at least once (is this some stereotype of Italian-Americans?). At least three times a chapter, I found myself muttering "Oh, don't be so stupid, Stella!" Throughout the novel, she does things that would get her (a) fired, (b) disbarred, (c) sued, and/or (d) arrested. This is a NEW YORK TIMES best-selling author? This is worth seven bucks for the paperback? Oh, puh-leeze! Nancy, take a basic fiction class; learn to write before you embarrass yourself by publishing any more of this drivel!

2.0 out of 5 stars slap-dash plot development, June 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Trial by Fire (Paperback)
Even an undiscriminating booklover could not forgive the nearly incoherent plot, the sophomoric writing, and the non-existent character development of this book. Even the main characters were downright unlikable. The only reason to read this book through is to discover the laughable plot twist that brings the story to an end. This book is the equivalent of a terminally ill patient, and its time to call Dr. Kevorkian.

1.0 out of 5 stars I absolutely HAVE to write this., April 11, 2009
By
This review is from: Trial by Fire (Paperback)
I know it's an old book by now, but if I found it, some other poor unsuspecting consumer might stumble onto one and waste her money. Trial By Fire is without doubt the worst book I have ever had the misfortune of purchasing. I got the audio version and from the first sentence I was cringing at the pitiful plot and the psycho characters - no, not the villian, the heroine! Crazy looney-toon, cussing and screaming and yelling and scratching and flying off into tantrums over everything.

To top it off, the narrator is also the worst, so the combination was mind numbing. Educated prosecutors and judges, even in Texas, don't say "fahr" for fire. And, unfortunately, that was a word often spoken in this miserable excuse for a book. All her character voices were angry and spiteful, even in neutral situations, and it got very, very annoying.

Breath-takingly bad book in any format.
