For the love of bureaucracy,

In Kafka's world, people are but pawns in a bureaucratic system that cannot be fully understood or reasoned with. The Trial is a fantastic book, albeit dreary in its outlook and a bit inconsistent in its narration and plot development (due to the fact that Kafka never finished it). This Kindle edition is a fantastic reproduction. Kafka captures the bureaucratic nightmare of a legal system that is not only corrupt but completely inaccessible and unresponsive to defendants. Josef K. is charged with an unknown crime, as is common in his world, and must appear before the court to plead his case without any knowledge of the charges or what he should do. After meeting a host of lawyers, other defendants, judges, and other people associated with the court and his trial, his early confidence and indignation slowly gives way to uncertainty and resignation to an unknown fate.
