3.0 out of 5 stars Good start...
I found this story more engrossing than the previous Injustice For All, in part because J. P. Beaumont doesn't immediately jump into bed with one of the victims. He is really at work on the case. I also notice more description of place than previously, putting me in a context, letting me visualize the setting better. If I can "see" myself on the scene, then I feel more...

A unknown black male is found heaped in a dumpster. J.P. Beaumont is on the case. Through a series of connections, Beaumont figures out who the man is: a leading high school basketball coach who just lost at the finals before he was murdered.Jance presents us with an entire array of suspects and they keep us interested and reading well into the night. Yet, there are definitely deadends, as promising though they may have first seemed, an interesting and distant wife who isn't laying her cards on the table, some racial issues bring cause for consideration of certain suspects, an angry father is brought into the mix and we just don't know whodunit until the very final pages -- yet with almost no clues, somewhere around a third of the way through the book, the reader may start to find their gut leading them in an unlikely direction. Gut reactions sometimes tell us a whole lot.Beaumont is entirely likeable and human. This is no supercop who is spit shined and blemish free. Beaumont's life is his job; other than that, things are a mishmash. He drinks too much at times, he has many life regrets, he doesn't get the respect he should get from his peers -- and yet, he remains true to his work, and of course, triumphs!A great character. Certainly a favorite among J.A. Jance readers.Really enjoyable, eminently readable mystery, as it should be... despite the lost sleep that may come with opening the cover!A Definite Winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars J.A. Jance sticks to her winning formula!, December 29, 2003

This series keeps the ingredients that made it a winner from the start: a divorced detective that has lots of money and loves McNaughton's, a partner that only eats healthy food and lives with his two kids, a lawyer that was "inherited" together with the money and an obnoxious reporter that hates the detective's guts due to past rivalries. This mix makes the Beaumont series a highly enjoyable one. You can read each of these books in a few hours non-stop and be eager for more!

If you are not interested in reading the whole series you can still read this book alone, sine there is enough background information in it to fully enjoy it. Nevertheless, I would not recommend reading Injustice For All (if you are planning to read this one too) after Trial By Fury since the latter has information about the ending of the former.

It is hard to say which series is better, J.P. Beaumont of Joanna Brady. My recommendation is: READ THEM BOTH!

This review is from: Trial by Fury (J. P. Beaumont Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have drifted in and out of being a regular reader of mystery novels, only due to a demanding schedule. I bought Trial by Fury a few years ago after having really enjoyed a few Jance Beaumont and Brady books. It sat on a shelf until a few days ago.

I breezed through this exciting, plot twisting story hangning on every word to see what would happen next. I stayed awake a few nights and got through it in just a few days.

I tend to figure who a killer is early in a story, and this one was no exception. However, I was thoroughly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed "tagging along" with Detective JP Beaumont as he tracked down the murderer of a high school basketball coach.

A number of "scenes" came out of no where and blew me away.

The cool thing about the Jance novels is that you get to know and get to like the characters. Beumont reminds me a lot of '70's and '80's TV detectives who act tough, who are really very soft hearted, and always lonely and drink a lot.

I'm now an official Jance fan. I recommend this and all of the Beaumont and Brady books. They're enjoyable in any order, but it's kind of cool to read them in sequence and alternate between the two.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trial By Fury, July 3, 2007

I wouldn't miss a J.A.Jance book...I have read both her character series and can't wait for the next installment to come out. You really get to know her characters in depth as they run from book to book, each one gives you just a little more insight into their backgrounds and what makes them tick.
I was born in Arizona and have lived in Seattle so it is fun to pick out things from the books that are familiar to me.
As you read these books Joanna Brady and J.P. Beaumont become the people next door, not just fictional characters in a book.
Give them a a quick read and you won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Move Over, John Grisham, March 5, 2007

Wow, if I had been on a plane while reading this book, I'd break a personal reading record, possibly finishing the book before the plane landed. This book is actually the second J. A. Jance book I've read, have found an author I absolutely adore. I did not put this book down until done. I love the characters in her books, they're all well developed and in this one, I was taken by the friendship between J. P. Beaumont and his buddy cop. I love how J. A. Jance tells a story, so suspenseful and surprising.

The moral of this one is don't get romantically involved with a possible suspect in the midst of a murder investigation.

All the J.P. Beaumount books are engaging and worth reading. The characters are intriqiing and well-thought out. The story line just complex enough to keep you guessing. I strongly recommend the series.
