Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up--This scholarly study reviews Joan of Arc's life in two chapters, and then devotes the remainder of the book to a description and analysis of her trial. The information is accurate, and there are many black-and-white illustrations. A much-needed glossary and map are not included. The book is serviceable, but its dry, pedestrian text and dull appearance will severely limit its appeal. Polly Brooks's Beyond the Myth (Lippincott, 1990) is still the best biography of Joan for teens. Interesting and well-written, it gives enough material on her trial to make Nardo's book unnecessary.

Don Nardo is a historian and award-winning writer who specializes in the ancient world, especially the civilizations of Greece and Rome. He began as a actor and worked with the National Shakespeare Company before turning to writing screenplays and teleplays and, soon afterward, devoting much of his time to historical research and writing. In the past two decades, he has published nearly two hundred volumes on diverse historical topics. And having earned numerous favorable reviews, he is widely recognized as the country's leading writer of historical works for young adults. I really love this book b/c it has the actual
written account of Joan's trial. I love that it shares
exactly what was said to her, and what exactly she shared
in her defense. It also recounts eye witnesses. True history.
It was an excellent resource that I used last year when we studied
her life.
