Book Description

September 2002
Detective Inspector Pat North is assigned to the reinvestigation of a murder case in which James McCready was convicted of killing his partner, Gary Meadows. McCready has always claimed that the stabbing was an accident, and when fresh evidence comes to light he wins the support of gay barrister and MP Robert Rylands. When North discovers that her partner led the original police enquiry, their fledgling relationship is put to the test.

Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

The series of British TV mysteries on which this novel is based is less well known than the author's award-winning Prime Suspect series. Lady cop Pat North investigates a possible miscarriage of justice. Did the gay convict really murder his domestic partner eight years ago? It was Pat's own lover, the crusty, homophobic Mike Walker, who originally had charge of the case. Strong characterization prevails, and hot-button issues underlie the action. Casting Christian Rodska for the audiobook was a neat stroke. It isn't just that he's an excellent reader, but that he sounds the way the TV show looks. This indefinable likeness has rather more personality and color than the original. Being herself an actress, LaPlante knows how to write telling dialogue, and Rodska knows how to make the most out of it in three dimensions. Further, he brilliantly orchestrates tension for dramatic effect. Y.R. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
