Editorial Reviews

"Full of great writing and great acting" --EW.com
"A British spin on the Law & Order format" --The Boston Globe

Lynda La Plante (Prime Suspect) brings her trademark intensity and depth of characterization to this gripping British crime series. Each feature-length drama traces a crime from commission to courtroom, revealing the complex motives and machinations of the police, the accused, and the attorneys. At the same time, the series never loses sight of the victims and their families, compassionately showing the scars left as a consequence of crime.

David Hayman (Hope and Glory) and Victoria Smurfit (About a Boy) star as DCS Mike Walker and DCI Roisin Connor, two former rivals who share a fanatical devotion to their profession. In these three cases, they investigate a schoolteacher’s murder complicated by racial tensions, the tragic death of a toddler, and the killing of a politically prominent couple in their home. Created by the "playwright laureate of women crime-stoppers" (NPR’s Weekend Edition), this unflinching detective drama boasts innovative direction and daring storytelling.

UK TV sure knows how to find a twist for excellent crime mystery drama. "Trial & Retribution" is much more than just cops catching criminals. This series' episodes begin with the crime, progress through the investigation, continues with the trial and conviction. Throughout each 2-hour-plus episode, viewers get close and personal with the lives of all involved: victims, accused, cops, lawyers, judges, family, and friends. It's similar to seeing into the personal lives of leads in "Midsomer Murder".

It is not the humorous look at criminals as seen in "Raffles", a great new release. This DVD set box warns of graphic scenes--a huge understatement.
Graphic = lots of blood, nudity, language, extreme violence, and graphic morgue & crime location scenes. Once beyond the graphic scenes, there is some excellent writing, intrigue, suspenseful plot, and the short bits of romance, family life, and relationships of the show's characters.
IT IS NOT FOR KIDS--but 5 stars for adults with a strong stomach & fortitude.

The series leads include: DS Mike Walker (David Hayman-'The Boy in the Striped Pajamas')
DCI Roisin Connor (Victoria Smurfit-'The Shell Seekers' 'Ballykissangel')
Dr. Jean Mullins (Gemma Jones-'The Dutchess of Duke Street' 'Spooks or MI-5')
DS David Satchell (Dorian Lough)
DS Palmer (Vince Leigh-'Foyles War')

3 DVDs, 3 feature-length+ episodes, SUBTITLES, bonus photos, bio, filmograaphies.

PARADISE LOST: PART 1&2
Evidence following a violent murder of a white girl leads to the arrest of her boyfriend, Milton Jones (Clint Dyer-'Hope Springs'), black and suffering from drug resultant amnesia. The apparently closed investigation leads to racial tension and renewed investigations takes on additional twists & turns.

I own all of the Trial & Retribution series and set 4 ranks among the best. The combination of crime mystery, principal character development, and notable differences between the British and American court systems make this a compelling view. While I enjoy many British dramas, the characters in the Trial & Retribution series and the Blue Murder series are absolutely the best.I truly hope this series continues.

They compare this to law and order.... but I say it is "Criminal Minds" mixed with Law and Order. Why the PBS stations do not have this on their schedule is their loss. They are finding out the British shows are their bread and butter but don't bring the tried and true to our televisions for viewing. Some scenes are very graphic, but does not take away from the quality of the show. Personally, if you are comparing this to the Law and Order in recent years.... there is no comparison. This is much, much, much better. That's how I feel and I now have all the Episodes....

This show took a radical correct turn in both seasons 4 and 5. It had been warming up to this with season three and fully let loose with it with 4 and 5. This turn was to put a domestic drama between the two leads as they live together in an apartment while his divorce is pending. She is considerably younger than he is. He has two kids (grade school) by his wife. His wife does not want a divorce and she does not want to make any financial concessions. Everything they do as part of this domestic drama is spot on. There are sessions with a shrink. An attempt by the girlfriend to "reason" with the wife (a disaster). As the tension between the two mounts, she also starts meeting with an old boyfriend just to talk over her problems. They are not having an affair but she is definitely comparing his more placid personality with her current live in situation. Then put on top of all of this that there is a case to solve and then put through the legal system. I frankly lost interest in the murders I was so gripped by the domestic drama. I've never seen this done before, showing the real costs of the job by having two of them attempt to make a go of it. You also get a real up close and personal look at why a police person's marriage so frequently fails.

In season six this relationship is brought to a stunning crescendo as he dumps his problems with one family member after another onto her. His ex-wife dates a psycho she found on the internet who comes after all of them. His brother shows up on the lam from New Zealand. His mother shows up and she can never shut up about he should have never left his wife. These people all want to stay overnight too and be fed meals. Not a one of them does a lick of work either.
