This review is from: Trials & Errors (Audio CD)
Well, at age 48, I must say that I am not one who often finds new and fresh music that excites me. This CD by Magnolia Electric Co, does. I happened on these guys kind of by mistake---heard "Dark Don't Hide It" on the radio, and it blew me away, so I HAD to have the "Trails and Errors" release. Received it about a week ago, and it has never left the CD player. There will be inevitable comparisons to Neil Young, which i am sure the band would consider to be a compliment. I read a review that said "Trials and Errors" is actually an existential response to Young's "Tonight's The Night". When I read that, I thought the reviewer was nuts. So, I did what any good rocker would do---I pulled out my copy of "Tonight's The Night" and put it in the CD player, to be followed by "Trials and Errors". The musical experience was incredible. I would heartily recommend it to anyone.

I don't care if you're 25 or 55, this is one of the best musical experiences you will ever have. These guys are phenomenal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best New Rock Band, January 20, 2005
By
This review is from: Trials & Errors (Audio CD)
I was a huge fan of songs: ohia, so naturally Magnolia is great. I got to witness a show they did in Lexington, KY at some art gallery...it was a great intimate gig complete with a tribute to the late Warren Zevon with a rendition of "Werewolves of London". I can't wait for the new studio album. The new material is great. If you ever get the chance to see Magnolia live drop everything, quit your job, and go witness this great electric band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Other reviewers here got it right, December 30, 2010
This review is from: Trials And Errors (MP3 Download)
Guess I'm just pouring fuel on a fire that's already burning pretty well -- this is a flat-out awesome piece of work.

I became rather addicted to it, hearing it in my head even when I wasn't listenting to it. Like a stubborn fungus, the tracks invade your brain and refuse to leave. Lyrics like "you got such pretty eyes ... for a snake" and "kid you're so lost even I (the North Star) can't bring you home" resonate because the stories told in the songs are so believable. The guitar play is alternately beautiful and thunderously powerful, but always brilliant.

In sum, if my CD was an old-school LP from back in the day, it would have been worn out from the many, many spins of the turntable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting bleak brilliance that lingers long after you listen to it, November 29, 2009
This review is from: Trials & Errors (Audio CD)
i'm always kind of shocked when i find a band like this and discover they don't have a huge following. i did see them play in DC this past year and wasn't all that impressed with their stage presence. that said, i can say there are four songs on this album that simply own me because they are so stunning: dark don't hide it, don't this look like the dark, north star and leave the city.

this music obviously isn't for anyone, but if you love your alt-country Americana with sad and deeply personal lyrics, this is definitely worth your time. beautiful stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Got Still Somethin' To Say About It?, January 30, 2007
This review is from: Trials & Errors (Audio CD)
I was introduced to Songs: Ohio/Magnolia Electric Company through [...]. I kept hearing three different songs from this album, and many others from other albums. After hearing "Leave the City" for about the fourth time, I took the plunge and bought this album for $[...]. I have since bought three or four other full lengths and I really, really love this band.

Nothing can prepare you for this album. I cannot remember the last time I could visualize a live performance so clearly from a recording. I really love Mark Kozelek, but his recent live release, "Little Drummer Boy," simply does not compare. I am also a big My Morning Jacket fan, and I think this album beats the pants off the brilliant Okonokos. This album is a treasure. I must now make full use of its cost by spreading the Gospel of Molina.

a meditative, bluesy live album. Both comforting and disturbing at the same time. I can't wait for the new studio release in April.
